    Default Campaign map lag

Hello, looking for some pointers. I bought the Gold edition off of Steam when it was on sale the other week but for the life of me I cannot find out exactly what is causing the campaign map to lag out when I move the camera. When idling or opening the scrolls etc, I'm sitting at a comfortable 60fps roughly. However, as soon as I touch anything to do with camera movement I shoot right down to a couple of fps.

Now, as I understand it, Medieval 2 uses the same engine as Rome only with very minor tweaks to make it compatible with the vision for that game.. yet that run's fine, albeit a little laggy in battles which is entirely fine as I'm not expecting an unoptimized years old game to run perfectly on a modern rig. However, if I'm running Medieval 2 not bad, why's Rome so terrible?

    I'm currently running it on:
    • AMD Athlon X3 3.2Ghz
    • ATI HD 5670 1Gb
    • Windows 7 64bit

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Like I said it runs fine elsewhere in the game, but actually moving the camera on the campaign map grinds the game to a halt. Totally unplayable as you can appreciate considering a lot of the campaign is about moving the map around.. I love my total war games, but this is an annoyance considering Rome is the only one I'm left to play.

    Dxdiag output for anyone interested:

    Hi there.
    Welcome to TWC
Well, for one, you need new GPU drivers. Here: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloa...win7-64.aspx#1
Second, what do you call a "couple" of fps?? If it is still above 20 you need not worry that much. Is it also affecting the very picture, like flickering ??
Last, for now, do you have any background programs running ?? And remember that FRAPS also takes its own toll on the fps.
Edit: What screen are you using, what resolution are you using. Native resolution is always best ingame. Both in battles and on campaign map.

    Thanks

Being only 3 months out of date, give or take, I don't think it will necessarily be a driver problem for the 5670. I'd maybe have grumbled at that if it was a year out of date. Although, I'm not adverse to having the most up-to-date drivers, so thanks for pointing that out. An oversight on my part!

Hmm, more like < 10fps which isn't great and definitely not playable when you have to move around large portions of the map constantly. I'd like to reiterate that I actually haven't noticed any considerable slow down in battles, just the campaign map itself. Seems extremely odd to me.

My resolution is native 1024x768 the now, while I wait for my replacement monitor (last one packed up couple of weeks ago). So that's fine, playing at native. I also like to play a smaller resolutions for older games, since they tend to perform better due to obvious reasons.

I tend not to run things in the background, certainly no more than necessary. On occasion I will run with the browser open, but then I do that in Medieval 2 without much difficulty, if none at all. My RAM is never maxed out, and same goes for processor.

    Yes indeed.

I would like to ask what settings you use ingame, and what options you have turned on (eyecandy). Also related to above, as using the screens native resolution is absolutely the best option.

I have tried a combination of all types of settings, especially lowering shadows and vegetation and detail more than anything else. They tend to be the ones that are resource hogs, just like in Medieval 2. I've also just went for the straightforward default low, medium, high settings. Neither of them make a difference. Campaign shadows are off as well.

I have heard in passing through forums that the older CA engine does not like AMD as well as it favours Intel and Nvidia. Now, being that I'm running an all AMD rig, do you think that would be a problem? I know that parts of the game weren't optimized for all processors/graphics card combinations.

One thing that comes to mind is AA. Try setting it to low (dont turn it off).
Are you using "Campaign Shadow" ? That is notorious for killing fps on low resolutions. Edit: My bad, you did turn it off. Sorry.
    Edit two:

Should not be a problem at all. So do not be affraid.

Yeah I've turned that off. I like to turn everything that I can off to make sure it's nothing lurking in the background that's not compatible with my hardware. Campaign Shadow is off, yep.

I'm beginning to think that my experience of Rome is never going to happen haha. Unless, I piece together a really old rig which more than likely would work.

Some screenshot's of what's going on are below. Main menu, sitting idle on the campaign map and then moving about which induces the fps drop. See for yourself. Also, I thought Rome uses DX9 instead of DX8? Is that not the case. Apparently it's using DX8 in my case.. Anyway.

By the way, the big yellow number is more important than the FPS counter in white, that only updates every couple of seconds. I'm not using fraps to do that as well, so I don't even have that sitting lagging me out..

It's off. I have it on Speed setting, which has everything low and all enhancements off.

Oh and re-read my edit. There is a delay between the yellow and white FPS counter Realtime is the yellow, white is behind.

Well, that is what buggers me, as the numbers in Fraps goes red if there is something wrong......
Edit: Like in the attached pictures I just uploaded.

What, is that it ???? A drop from 61 to 35. That is really nothing to worry about. Fraps is way off, that is for sure, as 6 fps is not happening with out severe lag. As I asked before, is the screen flickering, does it lag when moving around, does it hang for a second or more before something happens. I am quite sure that there is something wrong with Fraps......

I'm not using Fraps, I'm using ATI's own tray tools which aren't anywhere near as intensive as a screen capturing program like Fraps. That's definitely not the issue at hand considering it's the same with or without that.

Lag occurs when I move the camera around the map. As you can see in the 'idle' picture, frames are sitting fine and the processor usage is low. As soon as I move it a touch, bam.. frame hit. No flickering however.

If I click anywhere on the minimap, I'll have to wait at least 30 seconds for it to render.

Edit: The best of it is.. even when I'm taking the FPS hit, the processor usage is still low.. so it's not even spiking that out. Totally bamboozling me.

Well, I can see that you are using Fraps. The yellow numbers in the upper right corner gives it away.................
In my last post I uploaded two screenies that shows how the numers will look like if there is something hitting seriously on your fps rate. The numbers are in the upper left corner.

I'm telling you, it's not Fraps. For this reason I used a program that wouldn't hinder testing, so yeah, I'd rather you didn't assume that it was. If you go to this you'll see half way down under Main features that it allows you to, and I quote: "OnScreen Display: When an OpenGL/Direct3D application running, the FPS, 3D API type, GPU Activity, and related information are overlayed on top of the rendering stream on a corner of the screen."

So I think we've established that "Fraps" is not the problem child?

Hmm, well in that case I apologize.
But, from your dxdiag: Fraps Video Decompressor,0x00200000,1,1,qcap.dll,6.06.7601.17514
One way or the other, I knew it was there. That is why I stood by my observations.
Besides, this is part of the problem, but by far not the largest, as it seems that RTW is the only affected game: D3D9 Overlay: Not Supported

I'm presuming ATI tray tools does utilize portions of Fraps's .dll's but I'm not actually using Fraps itself. I just want to make that clear as I'm trying to eliminate issues, not create them.

Thanks, Chris, but the mouse is just a bog standard wired mouse, so no wireless. It's not the mouse that is lagging, it's the game itself, which I can tell by the frame dropping.

I think I'm just going to reside myself to the fact that for whatever reason Rome doesn't like my hardware configuration/setup. Perhaps it could be a conflict within Windows 7, as some people have been hit and miss with older games. Would have been good to play, but I'll just put it on the shoulda been, but neva been shelf lol.

Back to the Medieval ages it is! Thanks for your help folks.

Campaign map lag is often caused by the mouse.

For example if you are using a wireless mouse this could be a reason.

If you got another mouse somewhere around, try it and see if that helps.

If you believe it to be because RTW do not like W7, play it in XP service pack 3 compability mode. That solves many problems.

I was mentioning a wireless mouse because those causing troubles a lot but i for myself have had
problems with a wired mouse once.

So if you got another mouse somewhere around just try it even if it doesn't make sense on a first look but this did really fix it for a lot of peple in case of campaign map lag.

And yes off course it were the fps being low when that mouse was causing me problems (can't speak for
anybody else in this case but for me).

It is an option and worth a try - if you eliminate all available sources of a problem, even if you didn't
solve the prob by that you will come closer to the solution.

:edit - and btw - it is not win 7 - i am running rtw since a week ago on win 7 - no problems on highest
settings and awesome performance (so exclude win 7 from the list of sources)
