    Default CTD on Rome

So I have now played Rome: TW for some while now and I love it! However of some ed up reason the game now start to crash, it crashes all the time when I load a campaign. Sometimes I can play a battle or so but at the end of the turn, it crashes. What am I going to do? This issue sucks

EDIT: I have now reinstalled the game and nothing helps. I have version 1.5

Post a dxdiag and give us some information on what graphic settings you are trying to use.

    Hi there.
Set the NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M to be the main GPU. It is done in the Nvidia Control panel. Intel(R) HD Graphics (Core i5) is not nearly enough to play RTW. That ought to help.... Hybrid Graphics sucks big time..... I know from experience.

I do have the BI expansion I shall try that soon. Just want you to know that starting a new campaign works and the game wont CTD, and sure I can start over if its just a corrupt savefile or something, however I still feel that I want some guarantees that it wont crash again when im half way through the game.

    There is no such guarantee.

I conguered all but one region out of a possible 199 regions in a mod without a bad save.

Disable autosaves in the preferences.txt annd set it to read-only should help part of it.

So corrupt savefiles are a known problem? Are there any ways of prevent this to occur? Any mod or setting? Disabling autosave sounds like a good idea at least.

EDIT: Will it help to shut off shadows and such?

The only things I know that slow down corrupt saves are a good cpu, a good gpu, a harddrive with massive amounts of free defragged space, and shutting down anything not related to the game starting with autoupdaters including Windows, and nice little "necessities" like WinAMP, MSN, mIRC, etc. for singleplayer.

I have alt and tabed out from the game often...let me guess...I have my self to blame right?

But my computer can play Napoleon and Shogun 2 with out problems so it shouldn't be a problem to play with shadows and such on right? And can we be sure this is my problem?

Empire,Napoleon, and Shogun2 are a whole newer game engine made for mutlitasking, not perfect but headed in the right direction.

RTW/BI/Alex and M2TW are made on the same basic engine based on an early version of Visual Studio, 2003 version, I think, and pretty much made for one purpose.

You're right, alt-tabbing can be bad. I think it got me a few times, too.

Even though I have not found any documentation, I suspect this game uses a big swap file, no matter how much ram you have, especially middle and late game when things for both the player and ai are big.

Ohh yes. That is so true. I have 16Gb of ram on my system. If I take an "inventory" of my Resource Monitoring during late game or huge battles, I sometimes sees some 10% of my ram in use. As swap I guess, as nothing else related to RTW could use that much. But still, ETW can use up 20-25%

Well so I guess that I will play with a medium setting and stop playing around with skype, facebook etc. while playing and I will be fine?

Aight! I'll go with that, hate to start over again without even being emperor of Rome! Now I'm going to kill some Gauls. Thank you Irishron! You always got a word of advice!
