Default Syrians die, Assad courts Latin Americans, Venezela condemns America while supporting Assad.

    Heil!

Assad told a visiting delegation from Latin America that Damascus was focusing both on reform and neutralising the "armed groups" it blames for the unrest sweeping the country since mid-March.
"Syria is taking steps focused on two main fronts -- political reform and the dismantling of armed groups" seeking to destabilise the country, he told the Cuban and Venezuelan foreign ministers.
Assad said "the Syrian people had welcomed the reforms but that foreign attacks intensified just as the situation in the country began to make progress.
"Despite everything, a process of reform is under way," he said.
Rights activists reported at least 11 people killed by security forces nationwide on Sunday, seven in the central city of Homs alone.
Six people were shot dead in the Karam al-Seitun district of Homs and another was killed in the Bab al-Drib area, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
It said security forces also shot dead at least three people at the funeral in the Damascus suburb of Dumeir of a youth who died in prison on Saturday, and that a fourth was killed by gunfire in Hama, also in central Syria.
The Observatory also said three soldiers were killed in Hama province in clashes with armed men who appeared to be military deserters.
Today's killings came a day after two people were killed at the funeral of Tamo, who was assassinated at Qamishli in the north on Friday.
They also coincided with the visit by the Latin American group in Syria to "show support."
The foreign ministers of Venezuela and Cuba are heading the delegation of leftist Latin American countries, including Ecuador, Nicaragua and Bolivia.
The delegates denounced the "political and media campaign being waged against Syria," state news agency SANA said.
The eight-member Latin American bloc's talks aim to denounce "political destabilisation attempts by the United States and its allies," Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro said before the visit.
"We reject all forms of interventionism that the empire is trying to apply as it did in Libya for a violent process of regime change."
Washington has renewed its calls for Assad to step down immediately amid escalating violence against anti-regime protesters that the United Nations says has left nearly 3,000 people dead.
Turkey, formerly an Assad ally, has kept constant pressure on Damascus by hosting gatherings of Syrian dissidents and repeatedly calling on the regime to introduce reforms.
Tamo's assassination, which sparked widespread international condemnation, was blamed by Damascus on a "terrorist" group.
Washington has charged that Assad's regime was escalating its tactics against the opposition with bold attacks on its leaders, while the LCC inside Syria has accused Damascus of trying to "physically eliminate" top dissidents.
The SNC is courting foreign recognition and plans to hold a meeting to elect its leadership, a member of the exile group told Egypt's official MENA news agency.
Moscow said on Saturday it would receive Syrian opposition politicians on Tuesday for unofficial talks and that it also expected to host a visit from SNC delegates this month.

TL DR? Assad says that political reforms are coming, yet people, or "armed gangs" as Assad calls them, keep dieing in ongoing protests. Assad denounces critics while various Latin American nations offer support to the besieged dictator.

Apparently, Venezuela's government is willing to oppose American 'imperialism', but supporting a bloody dictator who values his own power more than civilian life is perfectly ok.

EDIT: Not sure if this is supposed to belong in 'Syria threatening Israel' thread.

I've felt he tries a little to hard to be anti-US. One can be naturally anti-US, but then there the point to which you are "overly trying" to be portrayed as such.

Given how much blood of South Americans was spilled by US and its puppet "ally" governments in South America, I'm not really surprised they oppose its influence today. Would be interesting to see an alliance of certain Middle Eastern countries and South American ones.

South American lefties like Chavez are nothing more than a bunch of butt-hurt little sissies full of ideological resentment, not being able to get over the fact they(''the north'' as Chavez likes to call Americans) didn't ''screwed with us'' at will... larger parts of our populations(''The Proud Workers'' included) actually agreed and pro-actively took part in the ''screw''.

So yeah... it's mostly a psychological problem, an inferiority complex more or less. When Brazil stopped giving a damn about what the USA did or did not they got themselves out of the vicious circle, the same with Chile... it's sad to see the rest simply lag behind.

It has more to do with the fact that US has for more than a century attempted to dominate South America politically and economically, no wonder that they no longer want to be under America's boot, and thats the reason why they have a feeling of solidarity with some Middle Eastern countries that are now under a threat of American "democratization".

I repeat... it's a matter of being a resented cry-baby, SA leftists simply can't accept it.

They are not cry-babies, they are just aware of what US did to South America and do not want for that to happen again. Their problems are not "self-inflicted" but are result of US policies in XX century.

SA problems are mostly self-inflicted and except cases like Nicaragua, the Bay of Pig and the Colombians asking for US help, the US have not been much interested.

This. First act like retarded mother ****ers, massacre people throughout world for your political goals, impose "your bastard" dictators on other nations and then ask "Why world hates us?"
"I have always held the religion of Muhammad in high estimation because of its wonderful vitality. It is the only religion which appears to me to possess that assimilating capacity to the changing phase of existence which can make itself appeal to every age. I have studied him - the wonderful man and in my opinion far from being an anti-Christ, he must be called the Saviour of Humanity. I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it the much needed peace and happiness: I have prophesied about the faith of Muhammad that it would be acceptable to the Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the Europe of today." Yet the nations that stopped living in the past and shrugged off both American and Eastern bloc influence have become the most successful. South America is steadily turning itself around and I think the US will have a stronger competitor sometime in the next century.

By now it shouldnt be a surprise. Hell the US should release a press statement calling Chavez the world's best leader....he'd probably instantly respond that America is wrong and evil.

Pretty much, there is absolutely nothing the US could do or say that he wouldnt oppose. I mean look at Obama he initially praised him but for the most part the Obama admin has ignored him but he still quickly turned on the president.

At least someone like Ahmadinejad is authentically anti-American.

This Arab Spring sounds like the kind of event that would send a chill up Chris Mathews' leg. As it happens, Chris Mathews' leg is like a canary in the coal mine, warning of impending disaster.
