Unit Suicide

I was fighting a wall battle with my Gladiators against there Swords Hoplite's, and i was suprised to see the high casuaulties they where taking so i zoomed in on the fighting and discovered that Gladiators where simply running of the wall, not pushed, no they run straigth for the edge and fall off. In the end more then 2/3th of the casuaulties my gladiators substained suicided off the walls.

I noticed the swordhoplites do a similar thing but in less great numbers. Also, i never noticed this in vanilla, where they would run into the water during bridge battles. But this is something i havent seen before.

Yes, this is a relatively rare occurance, but it does happen. The fix I found was to tell the unit that was attacking the wall, to attack the unit that is on top of the wall.

Not all that rare, though. Usually it happens to me when I'm assualting some enemy walls and the enemy units seem to realize that they are going to losre the fight. so a bunch jump offthe wall and the rest start fighting to the death. I get it a lot. Especially when the enemy only has some really crappy garrison units on the walls.

Well, that usually happens to me during bridge battles. While I am fighting an enemy unit with my unit. the middle part of my unit fights the enemy units, who are already in the bridge, the side part would just walk like an idiot towards the water and the only thing to stop them from completely drowning is to disengage. However, I never experienced such things in RTW Vanilla.

There are more men in SPQR. lol units are 240 men compared to 160 for Vanilla on huge settings. ;-)

Also I just tell them to stand ground on the bridge and that prevents my men from falling off, unless the AI attacks with cavalry.

I'm fighting on large scale, so my Gladiators where 80 soldiers and i did order them up to teh wall and fight that unit. But i ordered them after that unit al;ready attacked my gladiators. But it juz looked really stupid to see gladiators simply run off a wall, i guess they couldnt take it anymore :laughing:

Hope such aI stupidity will eb adressed in the next Total War.

I've had it happen in vanilla when I've ordered a unit to run round the walls capturing towers and gates. Thye often try to cut the corner and end up falling off the walls.

In river battles you can also often drown those members of a unit that are at the river end of a formation, particularly if you tell a formation to move. Worst I had was when a scorpion unit tried to turn around and the left-most scorpion ended up underwater, the scorpion troops spent the rest of the battle drowning themselves trying to retrive it, I had to order them to rout to save any of them.
