Does anybody play as any of the smaller factions.I've checked a few of them out most are pretty rough.Sparta especially with their economic situation. Can't afford the armies you need to conquer settlements for more money.

Aitolians are a pain in the rear in the early campaign - you need to focus your forces and head sourth, while also making sure that the Antigonids stay out of Asia Minor. However, once you have Asia Minor, you're safe, assuming you keep the enemy out.
Then just amphibious warefare. Nothing but that, erryday.
actually spartans are among the easiest I think, just disband those useless skritai and put your Bodyguards to do the heavy liftings. They are extremely good for taking down walls and in siege operations. Just exterminate those Non-Spartans and destroy buildings rather liberally (outside sparta) but always build and develop Sparta, you'll need rebuilding and developing economy only when you've conquer the whole Greece, eventually.
Well, and rule with iron fist, pump taxes to VH everywhere and DO NOT keep garrison, true, they'll rebel again, but that'll mean more heads to be cut down and money to be squeezed
THIS IS SPARTAAAA

Smaller factions are awesome.
I am playing noricum and just crushed rome, i had to because otherwise theyd crush me and now other factions are attacking me... ist not easy but if u focus on war mainly and not on economy u can do it but war eats money and I owudl need that money to built up my empires economy -.-
but its fun... so far
exterminate, destroy, and tearing down buildings from your "victims" the immersion factor is awesome (since RTR is the only mod who make tearing down enemy buildings, as well as ruthless extermination, really worth it and can feed up your economy real good, other mods usually try to make every buildings have worth rather than to be destroyed, but this is the best since it explain why invaders are more willing to tear down buildings after buildings. - it still hurts in long run though, but not as bad as another mod used to be

I had to exterminate rome 4 times (population 400) until they stoped rioting O.o.....
btw I would prefer to just built up the economy and to live in peace with the neighboring peoples, and not to exterminate the population, but I cant do that because otehrwise I am going to be exterminated and I also have to exterminate the enemies settlements becaue otherwise i dont ahve enough money to keep my army and ti built a little bit economy
if u conquer flavia and patvium (i dont rember the exact name) at the beginning u have more than enough money to face any enemy....

Illyrians ftw.
the aedui. i've been saying this for awhile now
^Definitely, although I'd say Aedui/Arverni, as the only difference between them is their position and thus their access to certain AOR units.
I'm doing pretty good as Achaean League: Aitolia was kicking Sparta's ass (Sparta fell and all they have left is Megalopolis) and also fighting Epirus, so i unleashed on Aitolia, they have Thermon, Sparta, and some city in Thessaly left.
OMG! VANILLA NAKED FANATIC!
that means they are real![]()

Playing as Noricum going ok so far.Grabbed Patavium right off the bat.Got a few barb cities and two from Illy.Mediolanum went barb so I grabbed it too.Rome has declared but are fighting Carthage and Epiros.I whipped the one army they sent my way.Gearing up to grab Genua and Arminium from them.If I can't hold them I'll destroy all the buildings. The only thing I don't like is that all my units have to be retrained where I recruit them at.I understand that its because Celtic armies weren't standardized but its still aggravating hehe.
That's not necessary; you just need to build a government form in newly conquered territories that allows the training of factional rather than AOR troops. Which means "read the effing building descriptions!"The only thing I don't like is that all my units have to be retrained where I recruit them at![]()
I noticed that after I got one of the higher lvl ones built hehe.

i consider antigonid also a minor faction, at least at the beginning(only two big settelments)
EB II is finally out! ...NOW!!!...
Yeah, with barb faction's I don't try and do retraining unless it is convienient. It is much easier just to turn a few cities into specilized recruitment centers that pump out well armed/armoured/experienced units and build armies that way. Getting wrapped up in trying to use the retraining system to build an uber barb army isn't really worth it from both a gameplay perspective, and an enjoyment perspective.
For civilized factions, however, I like creating armies with an highly elite core that gets contiually retrained, supplimented by expendable AOR's and mercs. Spamming new civ. faction core units to fill the ranks and build armies from scratch units just feels wrong, and I like having legendary gold chevroned armies that have been through several epic battles. I am hesitant to move them into difficult situations, but God it's fun when you pull out a victory agaisnt overwhelming odds. There is something distinctly satisfying about ferrying an uber army back for retraining after a massive victory.
I can just imagine hard men parading through the marbled center of the capital, later to indulge the services of the less reputable area's of the city. Then back to the training grounds, and finally onto the ships to face they only thing that is still real to them; war and all it's despicable and ugly glory.
I am always careful what I ask of these men as they will do all I command of them, to the death if necessary. But it is my duty to make sure it is never necessary.
