Easiest language to learn.....

Assuming that English is your first language, what is the easiest language to learn?

I would assume that the Latin languages would be the easiest to learn: Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian. I can only speak a little bit of French, so I'm asking the language experts out there!

Well, Chinese isn't exactly hard to learn once you get the tones down. It doesn't have all the complex grammar rules of european languages. (no tenses at all, for example).

Spanish.
As long as you're interested, not too difficult.

I agree, this is only my second year taking Spanish but I find it isn't anything too difficult, I feel that it is mainly memorization.

Yeah, I'd say Spanish. Considering all H.S.'s offer it as an electoral class. They love to offer spanish and french, but do they ever offer African or Russian? Pfft...of course not. Why French over African or Russian, or Mandarin I ask?

My high school offered Greek and Russian for advanced juniors and seniors. It was only a two year program though. This was offered in addition to German, Spanish, French, and Latin. Well, we had to have Latin. We were an all male catholic high school.

Seems like schools are opening up more options now. We originally had only Spanish latin and French, then german came, and this comming year you can even learn arabic and japanese. I'd leap at the chance if I didn't know it'd be so mind numbingly hard, and that I have a difficulty learning any language. That is unless it's military terms from ancient and medieval languages.

Er, African isn't a language, but I understand what your getting at. Obviously they teach spanish because of the vast amound of hispanics in the US

Spanish I understand, but why french? Mandarin is ever more useful. The only reason people take french is because of that french propoganda campagin about everything having to do with their country being somehow more "romantic". Bastards, thats how they rope our womenfolk into their french mind schemes.

Their are some school districts that are starting to teach Mandarin from elementary school. They are really thinking ahead.

Yea my old high school is starting to teach Japanese, but it's lost German and Russian because there is no interest from students and, more importantly, finding teachers qualified in these subjects is really really hard to do. People with degrees and fluency in Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, or any non-traditional languages are more likely to get higher paying jobs elsewhere.

German is really similar to English. German is probably the second easiest language to learn. The first is Dutch.

Yeah.. Try Danish!! it's like German x5 because we have some very strange letters called; æ,ø and å.. It's damn funny to hear an american trying to say this; Rød grød med fløde!

It's is definatly Spanish, it is easy to learn and if you are in the US it can come in very handy.

Why is Spanish so useful? I managed to get along with just English.

Because spanish is spoken around the world, while English is also, but just a few more countries do.

And since it's as popular as english, you can speak to more people easier.

@ Imperator- In my mother's and grandmother's and aunt's opinions, it was a hard language to learn and they didn't study it too long before going to some other language.
