    Default Not enough population growth error

    Hi all,
    Ive got to the stage that as soon as a settlement reaches fortress/large city level, the squalor jumps right up to at least 5.5% or more, and population growth goes down to -2% in some cases (London and Venice (separate campaigns) have 10% squalor and -2% growth). this happens on multiple campagins, and only on VH. Basically I can't progress past this point.
    What files can I change to remedy this problem?

    p.s don't tell me I need to build certain buildings - I've played this game for... a little while now

    Cheers,
    Cochrane

    You need to build certain buildings
    And have a high chivalry governor, and possibly some good harvests.

    Citadels and Huge cities are supposed to be rare, not all over the map.

    I think that is intended, not an error. For players not to have citadels all over the map. Only some settlements can get to that point. Dont know what files can you edit, but you can simply "add population" from the game console and thats it. Or look for the settlement requirements and lower the limits.

    Just take in mind that you are unbalancing the game, it was supposed to be impossible for every settlement to get to the last stage I think, not an error

    Grrr PerXX, damn you
    Right, I get the whole certain cities thing, but if London and Venice of all places are going DOWN in population I don't have much hope for any other cities.

    My point is, as the population increases through constructive measures taken, squalor rises proportionately to completely counter any effects of positive population increase.

    You can go into descr_settlement_mechanics to modify squalor.

    Edit: I forgot to mention that in that file there is SOF, SPF, and SIF. P is for population growth, O for order, I for income. Squalor affects both order and population growth so it has two entries (SOF, SPF) associated with it. If you just want to change pop growth, then only edit SPF.

    This is indeed a deliberate feature of 6.4 in order to make Citadels and Huge cities rarer as they were in history. I know some don't like this as it limits access to their best units but it is easily fixable. Just do a forum search, there have been several topics recently on this and how to alter it. The file you need to alter is descr_settlement_mechanics. I even saw a post a while ago where someone had done the work for you and provided an alternate descr_settlement_mechanics file for you to upload and replace your existing one. Hope this helps.

    In general, every attribute/ancilliary who decreases squalor or boosts farming is good for you. For huge cities, I would advise you to find yourself a young general (or several) who has attributes like "active builder" or "good farmer", transfer his useless ancilliaries to others so that he can at least take 2 ancilliaries (the max is 8, if he has 7, he can take only one more), if you're christian send him on a crusade, win it (You'll have chance to get hospitaller night, templar knight or teutonic night ancilliaries, depending on your faction). The crusade + the ancilliaries boosts your chivalry attribute. Apart from the crusades (not everybody plays christian) win several battles with odds not in your favor, make a max of prisoners, then free them. In a few turns it boosts your chivalry too. Then put him in a city, tax always low, to give him good governor traits. I never had a problem reaching to huge cities like that.

    For citadels, that is another problem. If you want to have a citadel for every castle, a very simple thing you can do in descr_settlements_mechanics.xml, scroll down till the end, you will see this value :
    population levels
    <!-- city -->
    <level name="village" base="500" upgrade="1000" min="500" max="1500"/>
    <level name="town" base="1000" upgrade="3500" min="500" max="5000"/>
    <level name="large_town" base="3500" upgrade="9500" min="500" max="12000"/>
    <level name="city" base="9500" upgrade="19500" min="500" max="25000"/>
    <level name="large_city" base="19500" upgrade="30500" min="500" max="60000"/>
    <level name="huge_city" base="30500" min="500" max="500000"/>
    <!-- castle -->
    <level name="moot_and_bailey" base="1000" upgrade="2000" min="500" max="1500"/>
    <level name="wooden_castle" base="2000" upgrade="4000" min="500" max="5000"/>
    <level name="castle" base="4000" upgrade="9500" min="500" max="10000"/>
    <level name="fortress" base="9500" upgrade="22500" min="500" max="21000"/>
    <level name="citadel" base="22500" min="500" max="30000"/>

    This makes it very hard to reach the 22500 required. You'll just have to change the value to 22500 or 23000. Then you can always reach the 22500, with a good general, of course
