Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he wants to bring ex-Soviet states into a "Eurasian Union."

Putin said the new union would build on an existing Customs Union with Belarus and Kazakhstan which from next year will remove all barriers to trade, capital and labor movement between the three countries.

"We are not going to stop there and are setting an ambitious goal -- to achieve an even higher integration level in the Eurasian Union."

i'm sceptical about how successful this is going to be; most central asian states are fairly independant minded, never mind how much history the may have had with Russia.
plus i hate to say it but the CSTO is a wounded bear, and the SCO is increasinly China's SCO, rather than a joint Russo-Chinese security group.

well Russia has proved itself unreliable as an ally, so it's really no surprise there; as we mentioned before, russia doesnt see itself as having allies, rather it sees its allies as 'interests'.

Putin and his colleagues are actually worried about China's inroads in former soviet bloc countries, even in Hungary, Romania, Poland and the Ukraine; for Moscow, the whole point of SCO was to re-insert Russia back into central asian security and energy as its top dog; unfortunately for Russia, China ended up dominating the SCO hence why Moscow has been trying to emphasize the CSTO.

compared to russian business, Chinese companies have made a lot of business ventures/relationships with a lot of eastern european/central european countries; in particular belorus and ukraine.

putin would be worried about China's expanding trade relationship with all those aforementioned countries, and increasing influence as well, but in particular, putin would be worried at russia's declining influence not just at NATO hands but also at China's hands. siberia's economy is already more tied to China than it is to european russia.

quite the contrary china has very much been present in romania, at least, for the past couple of years. since 2008 quite a large number of chinese factories have set up shop in romania, not to mention the scores of chinese workers coming into the country at a steady rate.

Also the figure of three million entrepaneurs is somewhat suspicious. That is a BIG number. One must ask in this case what is considered an entrepaneur in this statistical analysis and what and how long they were jailed for. Are they counting cases where an owner of a street kiosk got a little too drunk and had to spend the night in the drunk tank? I suspect they are because of the figure of 3 million people. Russia does not even have 3 million people incarcerated. USA does not even have 3 million people incarcerated and it has the highest population of incarcerated individuals of any country. So this figure is highly suspect.

I think most people know that, but I was wandering what the the relevance of explicitly mentioning that out of the blue was.
