Default [Citizen] Prince of Essling (Patron: 'Gunny)

    His bit
First I would like to thank Gunny for offering me patronage. I was quite shocked to receive his PM and at the same time felt extremely honoured with his offer.

Although I only joined TWC on 21 December 2009 I was a long-time active “guest” – in particular looking at the mods for RTW and MTW to try out. I was (and still am) greatly impressed with skill and perseverance of the modding members of TWC - they have my utmost respect for what they do.

I decided to join when the Total War series moved to the gunpowder era, and saw some posts on TWC whicht I thought lacked appropriate quality or slightly faulty information. These posts made me think that I might be able to contribute in a small way by supplying historical factual data/information, illustrations on uniforms, try to help point modders to areas to look at for information etc.

Starting very tentatively - mainly browsing to get a better feel of what was required/expected – I posted a few very short comments, links to websites etc. As I became more confident my posts have become longer, hopefully more informative & helpful.

My particular specialism is Napoleonic warfare – and though I do tend to post mainly on the NTW boards. I do also branch out to ETW & Vestigia Vestigiatus.

I have assisted EmperorBatman999 with his “Foreign Legions Mod” at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=366775. Most recently I have provided him with uniform plates for foreign troops raised by the various Allied nations. I have been (and still am) feeding him via PMs background information on these units.

I have also assisted Deejay with his “Napoleon: Art of War” mod now cancelled but the Social Group still exists at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/group.php?groupid=1368 – again I provided lots of uniform plates, contributed much background, historical factual & comparative information, comments & reasoned arguments.

I am currently assisting Steph & L’Aigle behind the scenes on their “Napoleon: Masters of Europe” mod at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=478635 I have again provided uniform information, data on army sizes, initial distributions etc via e-mail.

As to threads I have started – the most significant is: Useful websites - covering Uniforms, Flags, Naval, Maps, Downloadable books, Orders of battle, Paintings, etc athttp://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=384319 which has been stickied as a resource for all to draw on. I started the thread because I noticed there wasn't any storage area for useful websites that either I or colleagues had found.

I have also been producing basic information on Napoleonic Regimental names to help enhance peoples’ experience of the game – see Minor States/Nations thread at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=436889; also French Regimental names at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=408864 & others.

I have also tried to help colleagues with suggestions on suitable reading material - both in print & electronic format, for example see http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=395525

In Vestigia Vestigiatus I responded on “Tricky Napoleonic Questions” at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=456003 resulting in Marechal Ney commenting “Prince of Essling...you have made my day 10 times over. I have looked for these kinds of records (the lists of officers) for years (well...maybe one and a half). Rep cannot thank you enough. I hereby name you Chevalier in the Faux Legion D'Honneur. Felicitations!”.

Where I contribute to discussion in areas of interest to me I try to put forward sound, convincing, well reasoned & interesting arguments and opinions backed up by appropriate facts. I hope that I have for the most part kept a calm air surrounding my posts even in heated debates.

I have invested so much time in nearly two years as a member. I hope to persuade you, the Citizens of TWC, that I am a worthy member of a promotion to this most esteemed rank.

In conclusion, I am absolutely amazed that I am even being considered for citizenship, and as I do most sincerely thank Gunny and the Consilium de Civitate for their time, and hope that you will be able to accept me.

Even if I am not accepted, I will continue to endeavour to assist colleagues.

    Cheers
    Ian

My Bit What more is there to say? The Prince of Essling is one of the greatest historical contributors to the NTW forum. His knowledge has helped mods like the Foreign Legions mod be realized; and his vast databases of information have undoubtedly helped countless more, not to mention simply enlightening people. He is a credit to all those who have ever donned the title "Historical Researcher". He uses this knowledge during debates about the Napoleonic Wars, debates in which I have never seen him lose his cool. Apart from this there is not much more I feel I can say, his application speaks for itself, and I hope you all will see the same qualities of citizenship that I have in the Prince.

I like Prince of Essling and his application. It's clear to see he provides much needed and key historical insight for Napoleon/Empire era modifications. His comprehensive useful websites resource for NTW is clearly a useful resource for modders.

Overall his input in research and historical background to mods looks excellent - looking at his profile wall he clearly appears to be the "go-to guy" for help of this nature for the historical timeframe. Other members clearly value him as a member of the community. I feel we should support his efforts by supporting him for a citizenship here. I wish there were more people like him; willing and actively helping mods with his superb historical knowledge to such a constructive extent.

I'm not sure about this one. He is a very helpful member and very good researcher but it would be unfair to other citizens to give him the rank on this basis unless we're talking about much more. In three or four months time yes, but now - I'm not so sure.

Work like this is indispensable for historical mods. I've voted yes as I appreciate his contributions and have faith that he will continue to contribute like this in the future.

I will be voting yes partially because I agree with Legio and partially because I believe dedicated researchers deserve more recognition.

I'm afraid I'll be voting no. I would be all for giving him a warm yes in a few months, but now is a bit premature, I think.
