Default Some units better than others?

Just a quick question: Is troops combat value made up only from the stats? or do they have some kind of
" ability level " that allows one battalion win over another battalion with identical stats, weapons, and so forth.

So should I only look to troop stats and their attributes, or can some factions like egypt have cavalry with same stats as some western cavalry but better?

    Hope you understood..

Over and above the stats you must consider the armor levels of the troops compared to the weapons they are facing, their skill levels (experience chevrons), and the unit type match-ups. Cavalry will usually destroy infantry but spearmen will make mince-meat of cavalry head-on, etc. Also keep in mind that morale level is of vital importance and often overlooked.

Some units are faster than others, some can be upgraded more and be better fully upgraded than their fully upgraded counterparts from other factions Eg. Royal Mamluks.

Dont forget morale, stamina, terrain and weather! Also if 2 identical armies take to the field of battle, one has an experienced General and the other only a crappy General, then the odds are massively in the experienced Generals armies favour, as it will increase morale etc. of his troops

Ok, I think I got it, so there is no " hidden skill level ", only the situation, environment, unit matchup etc matters.

And I have to count the bonuses given to the AI too, So even If I have identical troops to my foe, a custom battle 1vs1 spear militia battle I will pretty much lose every time unless I have environmental advantage or I happen to kill their captain, right?

That's correct, but there are some important values that aren't actually shown in game, and to see them you would have to look in the units data file. But it would be a pain to look at and compare the stats for every single unit in the file. You just have to figure out from experience how good units are I guess. That's how most people do it.

The AI gets a bonus on higher battle difficulty. I believe Medium puts you on even ground. Easy gives you the advantage, and hard/very hard gives the AI the advantage.

For cavalry units one of the most important attributes is the type of mount they are riding. Mount type is a hidden attribute and determines the speed and mass of the unit. Mass determines the penetrating power of cavalry (far more than the actual charge stat) and the ability of infantry units to resist the charge. Note that spearmen have significantly higher mass than heavy infantry, which is why they can resist charges better. I'm pretty sure that missile units have lower mass than infantry, increasing their vulnerability to cavalry charges.

Lancers have armoured horses, which are heavier than the mailed/barded horses that your run of the mill knights use. This is the main reason why their charges are so devastating.

Yeah an armored horse is still dangerous even when the lance isn't lowered, I sent one to attacke a unit of feudal knights, then they discovered another unit of feudal knights in between and still damaged that unit.

    Animation is a big one.

Morale, and stamina are also huge...

You also can figure with the total Defense -- armor, skill, and shield.

Skill is preferrable for melee ,,, shield/armor is good if you expect the unit is going to face hails of arrows... Also, using heavily armored foe against spear/sword troops yields a good effect compared with using them against troops with A.P. ( armed with axes, maces, pole-arms).

Definitely. The speed of the attack animation (and properties such as whether the animation can be interrupted) is probably the most important hidden stat. It is literally hidden, because you cannot find the values anywhere in-game.
