Do the weapon upgrades affect the actually projectiles being thrown/shot? Do the arrows in an archer unit do more damage with a weapon upgrade (siege missiles too), or is it only and upgrade for hand-to-hand fighting?

There are no weapon upgrades in SS. They were removed as they unbalance RealCombat stats and were replaced with experience bonuses instead. Experience increases missile accuracy but not damage.

That is the XP bonus. +3 total- 1 per each set of chevrons. Weapons upgrades are different. Showed a little sword symbol. Armor upgrades remain and give something like 2.5 per level. It was hard to balance the same upgrades for weapons and XP. For instance a peasant unit with 3 XP and weapon upgrade might fight with 4.5 attack instead of the current 2.

Swordsmith gives exp instead of weapon upgrades
well I didn't know that, I like it though.
Now how does it work in vanilla? do the actual missiles get higher damage or is it just hand-to-hand?
Been so long since I played vanilla but I believe MTW2 changed it so only melee gained attack with weapons upgrades. In RTW the missiles also gained attack so could become absolutely devastating.
Still that meant that if left as weapon upgrades to melee units could get 2-6 times their base damage and would completely upset balance. XP is the better solution as its much more difficult to get low tier units with very high XP that completely changes their stats while upper tier units that gain +3 are perhaps only seeing a 33% increase compared to 66%
