    Default Cavalry problem

Can anyone explain why my cavalry just stops in the middle of a battle I press to attack its gets up to speed then just stops and I have to micro-manage the damn things. It also does this when going after routing units Its infuriating.

I'm not sure I follow. When do they stop? Mid-charge? Mid-battle?

If I understand your problem correctly, such things can happen due to uneven ground, or the target enemy moving from his position - when this happens, it may cause your horsemen to pause.
Try charging only units that are standing still, or not moving very fast, and definitely do Not have your cavalry charge over a stretch of highly uneven ground!
It can also happen if there is disruption in the unit (if their formation is broken up, or they are too spread out), in which case they may stop to wait for everyone to get back in formation again.

Also, when chasing routing enemies, cavalry always try to go behind them - so if the routing unit is somewhere to their side, the cavalry may sometimes stop and wait for them to get ahead.
They may also stop in the middle of a pursuit if 1) The distance to the hunted is very large, and increasing 2) They are too tired 3) The unit formation is greatly disrupted and/or spread-out.
Try countering these by using cavalry that is fast and endurant, such as keeping one or two units of Light Cavalry/Missile Cavalry with the army for hunting purposes.

Telling cavalry to charge an enemy from too far away will also cause them to get tired and stop short on occasion.

Your cavalry isn't Chuck Norris you know, they need some rest.

they can get tired... and it makes all units a bit slower less functional.

Uneven ground / obstacles.. and also just distance you want them to travel / orders.

A lot of the time with cavalry , it even when you want them to attack an enemy unit -- you can just try clicking the ground in the relative position you'd like them to take. Often if you just order cavalry to attack a specific unit they will just attack the closest enemy -- even like 4 units of routing spear militia when you want that golden prize of a Direct charge into some archers

Ok thanks guys, I agree they may get tired but I have also encountered the problem within town or city limits when they have been resting most if not all of the battle I have a feeling it's a pathfinding issue were the unit just gets confused and stops and even on occasion just won't attack I never had this trouble in rtw so I guess I'm stuck with crap cav oh well.

Well, obviously it“s pretty difficult to make cavalry charge inside a city, where the narrow streets hinder them greatly - in fact, you should assume that you can“t, and then just be happy if they once in a while do it.
