As far as I know, it was their ability to form such a tight formation which made the Romans so successful. Like this, they could both put more pressure upon the first rank in order to break the enemy formation and have a numerical superiority on the hand-to-hand level. I guess that's the reason why they're at this distance from one another.![]()

each soldier occupied 1 meter left to right. the loose order you are thinking about is the flexibility of each cohort to operate independently of the next...
It was more a stabbing weapon. The legionaries would silently march towards the enemy until they were in the effective range of their pilae. Then they'd throw these, and charge the enemy. Their large shields and innovative armour + helmets protected them from enemy blows, as well as providing something to push them out of balance. The gladius was a short sword, especially suited to be used in the stabbing mode.![]()

i want my legionaires so bad.
I have to fight through 9 cities of Iberia filled with Averni and Carthaginians. Damn it i will do it.
Carthaginians? Did they actually manage to conquer Iberia or have they simply taken the Eastern coast as they usually do.

edit 2: still getting black screen, but i did get a pic of the RTR VII launcher for some reason. God i am a noob.
My map has Iberian with white Carthage covering the whole southern half reaching up the eastern coast to France, and reaching up to the Franco-Spanish border through the centre as well. Lusitania has a bit in Portugal and Celtibari (sp?) has Coruna, and Navarre area. I've been sending lots of money to the Celtibari to keep them alive.

And jealous will be lesser men who will never know the the honor of dying for the Glory of Rome. They are approaching the Pyrenees. In a tussle with the Arveni for control of Northern Spain. I will have to send my brave men into that storm.
