Here is the forum's own wording:
"Civitate
Any Peregrinus may be patronized in accordance with the Patronization Act. Upon becoming Civitate, the member gains suffrage and a voice within the Curia. If a Civitate fails to act in an appropriate manner and then holds three current warnings he is immediately subject to an Ostrakon, which will be started by the Syntagma Curator in the prothalamos."
So, what does that mean to me? Let's take this in two steps: privileges (first, because it is shortest), and responsibilities.
PRIVILEGES: I would get a voice and (where appropriate) a vote in the Curia. Although not explicitly stated, I surmise this also gets me access to post in areas in which I can not now post. Also, not explicitly stated here, but I believe I saw it somewhere: I get that neat "Civitate" sign off to the left of my posts; and possibly a little extra room for a sig (which I currently do not use).
RESPONSIBILITIES: "...act in an appropriate manner..." To me this means act in accordance with the spirit of the TWC constitution, and in explicit obedience to the laws that flow therefrom. What does THAT mean? And what happens if I forget a detail or two of the laws? Well, I try to abide by several principles that seem to have kept me far clear of trouble on the boards I have frequented:
1.) Be considerate of others. Beyond not flaming, this means re-read each post from the view of the person to whom I am responding to see how it would make HIM (or her) feel. Edit posts, if necessary, based on what the re-read reveals. Don't suppress the truth, but try to serve it up in a palatable manner. Laugh WITH them, not AT them. Presume each person on the forum is a mature, intelligent, courteous individual with a healthy sense of humor, until such time as ample evidence proves otherwise. If my posts are (mis)construed as attacks or hurtful, then adjust posts so as not to anger/hurt, or just ignore the party (don't post). Don't get sucked into flame wars: fight spite with calm, consideration and utmost courtesy --> usually makes the other guy quickly realize he is being a jerk without me having to tell him so.
2.) Don't spam. Don't even come close. Do not post anything just to post: Make sure I have something important to add (or to request) in each post.
3.) Ensure all posts are well thought out and well articulated. Each post is an extension of ME into this forum. It is the ONLY means by which most forum visitors will judge everything about me: Make it good! No, make it GREAT!! Review every post for appropriate spelling, punctuation, style, and content. (This is why you will see that virtually all of my posts are edited: I think I have obsessive-compulsive post editing disorder! ) And, for goodness sake, NOTHING that even vaguely resembles " 'lete speak!"
4.) Use this forum as an opportunity to learn from others about the game; and reciprocate by trying to help others with the game. Yes, it is a social venue, and some chit chat might be appropriate; but the game is why we are here.
To the above 4 principles, I would add one more that is not consistently in my list of behaviors; but which it appears is expected of Civitates on this forum:
5.) Directly object (to the offender) about obvious abuses on the forum and/or report them immediately to higher authority.
