How can I play as the Papal States without any CTDs?

Exactly. I have searched, but no dice. I was also wondering about changing the ug models on the musketeers. Like have them start out with their first ug model then switch to lets say the dismounted gothic knights ug model. I want to give the musketeers a different look without using any other programs. Any help would be appreciated. And the simpler the better.

You can play with Papal States at hotseat campaign.
I will expalin you how:

1st:Go to multiplayer and then press hotseat campaign
2:nd:Choose a random faction (e.g. Genoa) and then press start
3d:When you started you will be Genoa but pressing the console ( this symbol at your keyboard ~) After that press control
papal_ states
*4th:After that open again your console and press control milan (this will make A.I. to control Genoa)
5th:Have fun with Papal States!!!!!

I wish i was clear!!

*If you want to play as Genoa and Papal States at the same time just ignore this step.

Somebody NEEDS to STICKY THIS. For many years i havent known how to do this, now im exited. I can get a faction going and leave it and go to a dieing faction later. TY SO MUCH

Will this work without CTD's with SS 6.4 ?

I am playing as Papal States now with no CDTs in th imperial campaign, late campaign. However when you pick the papal states there is no description on the faction menu screen, which is no biggie for me. Playing the Big Cheese on this is fun. All I did was swap the mongols for the papal states in the desc_strat file under the imperial campaign folder. Easy! I moved the mongols to nonplayable list and the papacy to the playable faction listing, which is at the start of the desc_strat file. Oh! I tried switching the musketeer_ug1 armour model with the dismounted gothic knights armour model and it crashed before the start up screen for SS 6.4. I think there is something I have to do with the attachments, but I am not that advanced. Thanks for the help LAZY, but I went the regular route instead.

This will work!!I tested many times and i got no CTD.You may take a CTD when a faction destroyed,at script errors and other,but this is not because of hotseat campaign.

the only "program" you need for this is the windows editor! do not use wordpad as is loads longer...
Open the directory you installed SS in! Usually it is something like /Total War/mods/SS
Open the "data" folder! Search for a file named
exp_desc_units.txt ( i do not remember the exact name but there is only one file with "desc_units" in it )
open it

make a backup!!!!!!!!! This is the MOST important step!
The first "page" is a very good desciption of how this files works!
search for the unit you want to change... finding it is not always easy as the units name in this file does not always match the name you can see in the game...
this is where you can change the ug models!

a "list" of all ug models you can find in ss/data/units or ss/data/models it think... the file´s name is something like "models.db" there are only like 2 or 3 files so you only have to search for a file with "models" in it!

Here you can find ALL ug models that are defined already! MAKE A BACKUP! this file is a "prostitute"!

This whole thing is so easy that i do not even remember the exact file´s names!

just remember:
"descr_units" is where the units get their stats and a link to a file that gives them a look
this file with "models" is responsible of their look! as i do not have it installed here i cannot tell you the exact position...
but searching it manually by clicking around will take you only 1 minute!

Okay, so far so good with playing as the Pope on A Rope

I gave the papacy different units to use like Janissary Musketeers and Vikings and so forth, ya get my drift with that. What I want to do is keep the first armour set on the musketeers and then when it changes to the second set switch that second set to like the dismounted gothic knights armour set. However, I am just wondering if that will not mess up scince the dismounted gothics are shown to have the twohanded swords in their equipment file. I'll try and mess around with making backups, which I do if I know that I cannot fix the file afterwards.

By the way Magz Empire, that was a ripper. Better watch out, the Pope on A Rope is coming for you.
