I'm not sure who to play as. I like the Macedonians, and I'm fascinated by Alexander and his conquests. But I haven't played the Greek Cities before, and they have those uber Spartans as well as a foothold in Italy. I've played as Carthage before, and came very close to completing a vanilla campaign. I've considered trying them again in XGM. Carthage has it pretty easy though, despite (or perhaps because of) their cool unit roster.

You really should play the GCS some time - they have always been the focus of the mod.

XGM with the greeks was the most fun I ever had playing RTW, just an idea.

If you want to have it hard play Pontus, you will have GCS, Seleucids, Armenians and sometimes ptolemies too on your back, you start with two cities, pitiful income and almost no army so you'll have to rely on mercenaries for a while...
Later in the game you will get some decent to good units (pontic heavies rocks, bronze shields and cappadocians are good elites) but usually you will have to expand slow due to poor starting economy... Definitely an interesting campaign imho.

try Parthia on MM- no money, seleucids send enormous armies that with some luck get burried in the sands, and finaly if your lucky they will send an army with 3 war elephants, silver shields and so on, for a fun campaign GCS are great too

This sounds like the army that almost annihilated my poor pontics on MM, it was a nasty thing and I had to face it near pergamum against another half stack of greeks just to spice things up... Luckily I had plenty of peltasts, incuding thracian ones in a mercenary heavy army (5 greek mercenaries, 2 chariots and loads of mercenary peltalst plus my general) that was all my income could afford...
Came quite close, if they managed to defeat me there I would have had to attempt a last stand with nothing better than sparabara and hillmen...
