Which Baroque operas would you recommend? I've listened to Lully's Armide, Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (obviously), Handel's Rinaldo and have heard some good things about his Acis and Galatea, but would like a few other recommendations.

I'm not very knowledgeable about baroque opera, but Handel's Giulio Cesare and Moteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea come to mind. Outside opera, I'd recommend Purcell's odes for the birthday of Queen Mary II (I've been listening to them a lot lately).

It's hard to find good and complete renditions of Baroque operas. They always stage them with ludicrous modernistic sets, which drives me mad. Baroque is all about style and refinement, why must they butcher them in this way?

Yeah I agree completely on that last point. That's why I usually just listen to the opera without watching it. However Harnoncourt's production of Orfeo is uploaded on YouTube which has amazing staging and costumes, very authentic.

I honestly have no knowledge concerning eras of opera, but I recommend The Marriage of Figaro to anyone.

It is my great honour to have my poem Farmer in the Scriptorium here.
