    Default Phalanx

Well, in all my campaigns, a battle against phalanx units were really rare, most of my campaigns I just got tired or never reached Greece/Egypt. Now in my Romani campaign I reached Greece for the first time in one of my campaigns. I'm fighting against Epeiros (they conquered Macedonia and the greeks are losing lot of battles and lost Athens). I conquered Ambrakia and the other city at north of Ambrakia (I dont remember the name). I have one big army at Greece and I want to know the best strategies to defend myself and destroy the phalanx using my best army.

This is my army (all Camillian):
    1 General
    2 Equites
    5 Hastati
    5 Principes
    3 Triarii
    3 Leves
    1 Merc Cretan Archers

Depends on the enemy army setup, really. Against mixed-armies (most of the ones you'll face), destroy the non-Pike infantry first, using whatever methods you prefer. Once there are no more distractions, you can deal with the pikes. Draw them into a facing position against one of your units, it doesn't really matter which (I recommend the Triarii). Get your Principes/Hastati/Leves (why do you have Leves?) *behind* the phalanx unit, and start tossing Pila (javelins for the Leves). Hopefully, you'll do a fair amount of damage; regardless, charge them from behind. Hopefully, the 'formation' will still be facing the front, meaning you won't run straight into a bunch of pikes; if you're unlucky, though, you'll get pike-scythed. Regardless, once the Triarii are no longer facing a wall of pike, have them engage if necessary, along with Cavalry charges. Depending on the Quality and Skill of the phalangites (and your Battle Difficulty), the Triarii shouldn't be doing too much fighting, and cavalry charges against sandwiched opponents will probably Break them.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.
