Default Too many mods for MTW2 already

It seems to me as though there are already too many mods for M2TW than will ever be completed. Top that off with the fact the game most probably wont be released untill november at the earliest.

We cant really do anything about that though. Cant force people to join a few mods to help them be completed quicker, although it would be nice!

I think it is still very good to have people gathering and making up their minds now. There will be a lot more when the game is released, and many of these currently being considered might even never see the light of day. But it is good if they have a place to discuss their ideas and concepts and it'll help those mods to be released to speed up the process.

I agree with Zhuge. They should all forget their ideas and join in with Leipsana Romaika. Only kidding

I see two good reasons for recruiting mods before the game is released:

    1. Hopefully, CA will make good free bug tools for the modders as they see them preparing for the game..I think there is no game had mods before it is released. An encourge reason for CA, I think.
2.The search and debating part will be partly over when the game is out. I mean if the searching and historical accuracy issues, units..etc will be done while the game is already in development. So, when it is released the modders will go straight for modding.

Are there not too many unfinished Mods for the current version without contemplating the release of MTW2, the Conversion and Modification forum is full of them. There is a real danger here that the enthusiasm and excitement for the release of MTW2 will pretty much finish off the rest. The amount of people interested in modding has tailed off significantly in the last 6 months and many old stalwarts are quitting the community with the intention of rejoining once MTW2 is released.

As to would it be better to set up Mods prior to the games release, look at Europa Barbarorum, this was begun before RTW came out and is still not completed.

youre wrong about your first point. UT 2007 already has mods in the development stage
2nd point is a very good one, determine your goals: get your factionlist and units with a good reference picture. If this is done before the actual modding tools are released, it can seriously cut down on the time of its release.

Armed Assault, the sequel to Operation Flashpoint, has already mods as well. The modders have even started making models for the game.

It's not important that every mod will survive first contact with Medieval II. Some will die, some will be half-finished and a few will become major mods.

I agree that there are a lot of mods already out there that are getting ready for M2TW, but most of them are justb ideas really. I think MAYBE two or three of the actual ideas out there right now will actually comne to frution when Medival 2 is released.

to be honest the reason i am announcing my greek mod now is because when i announced mediterranean there was no modders really, and the idea was not original. i would like to have a greek mod for medieval so im announcing it now so i can start :original:

I dont see why some are complaining, the more mods being devloped only means the more mods that can be released sooner and better for the consumers. Sure, you could say MTWII is stealing the mod spotlight from RTW etc etc, but when MTWII comes out, very few will still be playing RTW mods i bet. Even if MTWII is just a revmap of RTW, it will still beat RTW graphically and featurewise. I dont see any problem with have many mods in devlopment at this point in time.

Well there are never too many mods. Remember, half of them will not even start, and about half of the mods that do start will die, and the rest will be playable. At least since they are being planned already, they might get finished before MTW2s sequel gets released. At this rate, all the RTW mods will not get completed before MTW2. We do not want the MTW2 mod scene to be as disastourus as the RTW mod scene, do we?

Zhuge, but can't you see why? I mean you yourself proposed a mod, can you really get after people for doing the same. I agree there will be to many mods, but its simple human nature.

The only thing i hate about the Mod scene is 2 of the practically same mod being made at the same time >.<

well you might not be familiar with how much planning must go into mods. Naturally, if we can get that partly out of the way before the game even comes out then mods can start actual work much quicker.

Besides, you have the most mod-manpower in the first few months after release. Better to get those onboard fast, don't you think, Holger Danske?

Just look at ChivTW: A great mod, just released beta. But nobody would join the mod and help out, although it could use the manpower. If ChivTW had a large team right from the start, we would all be playing it right now. :original:

If all mods banded together they could release a solid mod within weeks.

But the purpose of a mod isn't necessarily one to please the 'costumer'. It is to provide the modder with an enjoyable and (in the end) rewarding experience.

Sure, its great to have loads of ideas. Practically all of the mods suggested are great ideas, i'd like to play all of them.

People just forget that there are a limited number of people who can actually do the real work in a mod. Too many mods mean resources are spread thin from the start... then work goes slowly... people loose interest and start to leave... mods die... the pool of modders looses experienced members quicker than new recruits learn the trade.

This is what happened with RTW, and it looks like it is going to happen again with M2TW; a game far from release.

This was my point, especially since multiple mods want to cover the same era/area. Would it not be better to have conglomerate mods that share work on the same era and work together rather than a stack of mods that are the same and all end up being released in 2 years or not at all?

Also, look at how long it took people to make units in RTW. In M2TW the units are more detailed and each unit has multiple skins (a great feature for the game) but one that will slow mods even more and reduce the number of modders who can make good units down to the elite -> who will be under demand. i certainly wouldn't consider myself an elite modder but i have already had 5 requests from future M2TW mods for me to work on their projects. Each looks great, and i would love to work on all of them, but i have a life too :original:

    Here's an example:-

merge the colonial and american civil war mods

    merge all rome/punic releated mods

    merge all medieval europe mods

    merge all greek/perisan/macedonian/sicilian mods together
