Hi, I just got a new laptop, had to re-install COW, it all seemed to go very well (too well TBH), it seemed too good to be true, until I tried to play, every time I try to play the game I get the response: "Windows cannot find 'kingdoms.exe.'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

The first time I did this I realised (duh) I hadn't reinstalled the teutonic campaign, so sorted that reinstalled everything, but still I get the same response.

In case you havn't realised I'm slightly technically impaired, I've around the first twenty odd threads most of which I don't understand, or I do understand but they don't apply to my situation. If anyone thinks they know what's wrong I'd love to know, but you'll have to speak rather slowly.

It's gold edition, I had the regular kind before but that got stuck in my melted lap-top, so I guess it's different this time.

    Thanks in advance.

Well, that usually means that you a) don't have Kingdoms patch 1.5 installed, b) you have Medieval 2 Gold Edition, c) you didn't install Kingdoms at all, or d) you installed the mod to the incorrect folder.

I tried just re-installing, same thing: everything seems fine until I try to open the program.

Check the path to the mod. If that is messed up, then the call for the kingdoms.exe in the BAT file goes wrong.

Which version are you installing that you require the teutonic mod? In case it's steam, check here for the easy way: Creating a World - Mod Install for Steam
That will probably fix your problem - because if you install into the teutonic folder without changing the bat and cfg file then you will end up with an error.

Easiest way (if you have the time): download my version, it's available as torrent as well. Don't forget the patches in the second post and the update for the language installer.

How do I check that and how do I know if it's messed up?

    I don't use steam with Med2.

This is how your path should look: C:\...\Medieval II Total War\mods\Call_of_Warhammer

Easiest way to check: right click the mod's short cut, choose 'properties' from the small menu, and then click on 'open file location' - that should end you up in the Call of Warhammer directory (in your browser). From there you should easily see the full path on top of your browser.

Edit: you will find the correct 1.05 patch for M2TW here.

Is this right? "C:\Program Files (x86)\Medieval II Total War - Kingdoms\mods\Call_of_Warhammer"

    That seems right to me.

The part in red shouldn't be there in the path. Can you make a screenshot of your browser with the files in that folder (M2TW - not the mod)?

Most of the patches are in RAR or ZIP format - you will first have to extract them. 7-ZIP is a freeware program that works just fine there.

Edit: if you have installed any other versions of CoW before, then I highly recommend to follow this tutorial as form step 3. Don't forget to delete the virtualstore with M2TW content.

It appears your version has the right path in it already, so I'll just finish downloading that.

I have "j-zip", I think it worked now.

This is a brand new laptop, there are no other Cow versions.

    Thanks for helping me.

The VirtualStore fix isn't just for this mod - it will prevent that patches for mods (or re-installments) will get messed up. Highly recommended you do that - it's a 'one off' affair and not required to be repeated.

A note: do not change the installation path in my version as long as it reads: C:\Program Files (x86)\Medieval II Total War
