One of my favourite authors alongside Bernard Cornwell. He's written the Emporer series about Julius Caesa, the Conqueror series about the Mongols, and more.

The two series I mentioned are some of my favourites and I've read them both a couple of times, especially the one about the Mongols. I've also pre-ordered his next book "Conqueror" and I should get it on November the 1st.

So, anyone else loves this guy?

just read his Julius Ceaser one for the first time. I was impressed with how he managed to take some rather distant albeit impressive characters and humanise them. Making their paths and actions believable and interesting. Though i must say i enjoyed his earlier life better, being less documented, it gave him a free reign on some things - such as the spartacus rebellion, which was very well written. Whereas his last book was i found the weaker of the four - probably due to constraints of history.

Though for a fiction type book on a historical character the development was very organic. Would definitely be interested in reading the mongol series.

I like his Mongol series better, but it has been some time since I read Emperor. I'll have to re-read it for when the next book in that series comes out.

The Emperor series is truly a wonder to read. Haven't read the Mongol series. The Mongols just don't interest me really. There's a fifth Emperor book in the works isn't there?

He definitely intends to write one.

Not my cup of tea. Too much magic and stuff, and the battles were like he was describing the combat from vanilla RTW (the Roman troops slaughtering their way through armies in a matter of seconds). Turning Marcus Brutus into a ninja wasn't the best idea in the world.

If you ever find violence doesn't solves anything, you haven't used enough.

Have to agree on that. The epic swordsman, son of a whore, who was in reality a shy nobleman didn't convince me all that much. His series is great though. I especially liked his portrayal of Marius and the Primigenia
