Default Camp of Lucius Valerius Poplicola - Messana - 486-487AUC

The trip had been short but the preparations took longer than he had imagined. Lucius had good experience with ships but not with a navy in a practical sense. He had read about the exploits of Lysander, Eurybiades and Thermistocles and the various books in his library had an assortment of works that he found interesting but the sheer scale of an overseas invasion nearly drove him mad. He cursed at his sailors and they would curse back and the news of the arguments spread amongst the troops like wildfire. What they made of it was anyone's guess but Lucius couldn't tell if the admiral was a genius or if he was merely insane. What Lucius didn't know was that the admiral thought the same of him on his own turf, assuming Lucius was around any turf to stand on.

As it was a beachhead was established on the coast of the strait and it was unclear from where to proceed. Lucius sent out scouts on a 4 day mission while the logistics of the operation were set up in case the siege was possible but only through starvation, the mission would decide if it was necessary but it was better to be safe than sorry, and assuming anyone reads of this exploit they can at least see I had more foresight than Corvenus, I can hardly imagine him setting up an operation like this...though apparently he did, either that or his troops lived off the land. By the look of it, I wouldn't be surprised. The landscape was almost devoid of agriculture. The farms and their land stood in stasis across the plains as the sun behind the clouds made it glow with a sullen, dim appeal to it. The land was still recovering from the last invasion and it would have to do so again, and we'll be blamed for it.

Lucius returned to his 'tent', though tent was not quite the right word to use. Inside were books from his library, a stone bath taken from some local noble and all the furnishings of home, albeit compacted into a smaller space. It looked much like his office when he was praetor though in a bitter irony the tent had more living space. Lucius sat at his desk and turned to Vibius, who was still standing faithfully to the lateral portion of the tent.
Send a letter to Rome, tell them I have established a beachhead and we'll find out soon enough whether Messana is as 'impregnable' as we firs-Sir! The scouts have returned! At the entrance to the tent stood a centurion of the tenth, out of breath. Okay then, send them in. Yes sir! He sad and soon the scouts were inside, muddy and wearing travel worn green cloaks.

Sir, we come with tidings, Messana is well-defended my lord, we may not be able to take it by storm before the rains. Lucius looked as if he were going to explode, as if all the rage in his being would come hurling at him, yet, instead of shouted words came an angry but controlled tone. How many men are there? Lucius was squeezing terrifically on a coin in his hand, he had found another like the one Scaeva gave him earlier and he felt like breaking something, the coin was the closest at hand as it bent further and further. It was all he could do to avoid screaming. They are fifty more of them for every hundred of ours my lord and if we wait I'm afraid their numbers will grow. The farmers from across the countryside are rallying to their cause to protect their crops and the Punics are outfitting them with weapons. They will be a crude fighting force but one which can act as a reserve for them and disrupt our plans regardless of their skill with a blade. As the scout finished his sentence Lucius threw his coin as hard as he could into the ground and it stuck in place in the carpet as the carpet was pushed into the moist soil.

Is there anything else? Lucius was breathing heavily now, attempting to calm himself, is this the gods' punishment for our victory at Rhegion? Unfortunately there is sir, they are marching this way. Lucius noticed Admiral Calpurnius in the back, how long as he been standing there? Regardless, a smile crept along his mouth. My turf, admiral...a realization crept over his face as well and only one thought was in the admiral's head, What idiot gave that order?

A letter arrives at the camp of the Consul, bearing the seal of the Senate,

    Consul Valerius,

You have been given full authorization by the Senate to use whatever force necessary to annex the settlement of Messana from the Poenii.

Here is the copy of the succesful bill that I had passed for you,

    Explorata Consulari Siciliae

    I. Consul Valerius shall be permitted to recon in force the enemy defenses at Messana.

II. If, according to the Consul's assessment it is in-fact takeable, he shall annex the city with all the force required.
My best wishes on your campaign Consul, may fortuna smile upon you in your coming trials.

    Consul Marcus Atrius Merula

    Initial Strength

Apparently the governor...Calpurnius was mounted on his horse behind the command staff as an observer, one of Lucius' requests so that a third party could observe and validate his reports on the battle. The Punics were formed up at the top of the hill, ready to move and Lucius had deployed his men in the standard formation, modified due to the lack of Rorarii with Leves on the flanks of the formation rather than leading it.

The original plan was to advance on the enemy, possibly gaining the top of the hill they faced but Lucius had decided against it, I'd rather fight them fresh at a disadvantage than to have my men faint from climbing. The decision was odd to the admiral, giving up the high ground probably isn't a good idea. The Punics had freed slaves and workers to face Lucius' invasion but that was not all that came forth.

The Libyan spears and small units of their elite cavalry were there, including their Liby-Pheonicians if his eyes served him correctly and all of them were marching forward. Calpurnius looked to hid front, the consul was still as stone.

It wasn't long before the initial clash. The enemy skirmishers had a decided advantage on the hill with the range bows would usually get on flat ground or on his ships if the wind was not too fierce and the Punic hoplites swept forward into the pila of the Hastati as the enemy cavalry decimated his left flank Hastati in their initial charge, though the latter held their ground and began dealing out far more than they had received.

It wasn't long before Lucius broke his pensive state and begun the furious dispatches of orders, it was only then that Calpurnius realized why he held this ground. For one, while the enemy skirmishers held the hill, the enemy infantry would have to fight on equal ground and Lucius' Accensi held a small hill in front of him and were able to match the range of the enemy javelins with his slings. Two, the ground was excellent for maneuvering and the steep nature of the hill made it difficult for the enemy soldiers to get down safely, slowing their own movements. Lucius was cursing much like his own sailors at his couriers to make all available haste and the result was surreal. The Principes split off to both flanks at the same time and the triarii formed into a thick fighting block in the center and marched forward, into a gap in the enemy center towards their skirmishers.

It was a beautiful maneuver, all done at once as if it were a dance, but where are the cavalry? The Equites were on the left flank, yet the Campanians were missing, had they deserted? A horn was blown as if in response and white tunics and shining armor appeared on the hill, tossing javelins immense distances into the rear of the Punic formations, heading straight for the enemy skirmishers.

More horns started blowing to the admiral's front and his ears were assaulted by the cacophony of sound only feet away, Lucius kicked his horse on the sides and his guards followed as Lucius drew his sword and it caught the light as he held it upwards, the glimmering light his signature signal for a full attack and his men took it to heart. All the formations broke and attacked in single-combat as if they were barbarians, the sudden switch in tactics caught the Punics off guard and many were cut down in the initial rush as Lucius himself was amongst his Hastati, possibly to gain the young soldiers' favor.

The cavalry however, kept their discipline, after Lucius killed two Punic hoplites they then charged through the enemy, reformed and came back upon them from the rear, it was too much for them.

The enemy began to rout and the equites on the left flank rushed to join in the pursuit as did the rest of the army. The Campanians helped the right flank Principes rout the local elite Libyans and continued forward to join the equites and the rest of the army in the pursuit.

The enemy reinforcements then arrived, just as their main force was routing. The sight of sixteen hundred men routing had gotten to the five hundred men of captain Aqhat but he knew his duty. He ordered the men to march forward, he would at least kill the enemy skirmishers before he was forced back into the city.

Calpurnius was scared, in a fleet action the admiral's ship was the most protected in the fleet but on land, he was an observer, an observer in danger of losing his life. Five hundred men were coming towards him and he was prepared to run when a unit of Leves came to blows with the Punic force.

Gods damn Rome for sending the wrong compliment! Lucius was frustrated, if the senate had sent him a unit of Rorarii instead of extra Leves like they were supposed to he couldn't have gotten the eighth cohort mixed up with their actual role in the army but he still did not waste any time. He had called back most of the cavalry and some Hastati that were left behind during the pursuit and began marching with haste towards the new fire he had to put out though even the petty numbers he had brought were unnecessary as Captain Aqhat was killed by a javelin thrown by one of the Campanians, I ought to have one of them teach me that someday. The Punics were in full retreat.

Official tallies were made for the dead and wounded, they weren't pretty but they were far below the expected casualty list for the taking of Messana by storm before he learned they were twice the original estimate.

Lucius had the governor who had fled the battle killed when his men marched into the city. All land-holders in the city were banished back to their estates until peace terms with Carthage were lain out, whenever that may be. Lucius was unsure if the force he faced was the main Sicilian garrison and he had half a mind to send a letter to the senate requesting reinforcements and/or permission to assess the rest of the island but he decided it could wait, the men needed rest and they earned it.

Another letter arrives at the camp of Valerius,
    Consul,

Your campaign has been extended by the Senate, here are your orders that were passed in the bill.

    Lex Continuatio Punici Belli

    1. Consul Merula shall take the second legion over the sea to Sardinia and annex the island for Roma.
    2. Following his successful victory at Messana, Consul Valerius shall sure up the defenses in the city, and given Senate authority to raise troops to defend it at Consular discretion.
    3. He shall then take the first legion and destroy any other armies the Poenii may have in Sicily.
    4. Following a successful campaign in Sardinia, Consul Merula will land the second legion on the Poenii (west) side of Sicily, and, coupled with Consul Valerius' assault from the east, the two Consuls shall annex the Poenii stronghold of Lilybaeum, solidifying Roman power on the island.
    May fortuna give us victory,

    Consul Merula

A messenger arrives at the camp. It had been quite a travel from Rome. The biggest challenge had been finding a ship willing to cross the strait to Sicily, most merchants and ferrymen weren't too fond of armies rampaging over an island where they had to travel to. But he had found one man willing to bring him there. Old and crazy he certainly was. At least he was an entertaining fellow to travel with. On the island it wasn't hard to find the camp. Just follow the scorched earth until you see tents. Luckily they where Roman tents.

In the camp he left the letter at the consul's tent.

    Dear consul Poplicola,

Elections are coming up again. I am certain a man like you has thought about this already but I feel to request that you continue your term for another year. You and Merula should destroy the Carthaginian threat once and for all. Once they are only on Africa and Spain they are no threat to us. Let us hope they are wise enough to say yes to peace after we finish.

Anyways, there is one thing I would like to ask. I wish to run for praetor and I am in dire need of support, maybe you could send someone to vote in my support and you can count on it that I will lobby for the continuation of both you and Merula's terms.

Also, congratulations for your magnificent victory. Together with the one at Rhegion we quite showed them what Roman steel is really worth. This Punic War is going far better than the last one. I say it is because we have proper leadership this time, not some fool.

    Greetings,

    Caius Geminius Dives.

A letter arrives bearing the seal of the blackbird,

    Consul Valerius,

I hope you have cleared the island of the Poenii threat as I have landed on the north western coast.

I will march south to put Lilybaeum under siege, I trust you will join me there in due course and we shall take the city together!

    May Fortuna guide you,

    Consul Merula

Only two days later another messenger arrives in the camp of Consul Valerius, he is dusty and exhausted from a long hard ride, he hands the Consul a letter bearing the seal of the blackbird.

    Consul Valerius,

I do not know how far away from my position you are at present, but I would ask that you make haste wherever you are.

I am some five miles north of Lilybaeum, most of the Poenii garrison has left the city and has converged on my army, they will be here in mere hours my scouts tell me.

They outnumber us by quite a margin and unless the gods choose to favour me with some divine tactical brilliance, I fear the day may go against us.

My hopes that you will arrive soon.

    Consul Merula

Lucius was busy with many scrolls at his desk when the messenger came in, the sheer amount of mercenaries necessary to protect Messana while he took the army proper West astounded him and more importantly, challenged him. He felt refreshed dealing with the numbers before him as he made new orders of battle for the legion of mercenaries at his command along with the new Alae he was planning to use in the assault on Lilybaeum, men he was no longer able to use for their intended purpose if what he read was accurate. Lucius began writing a short letter in response.

    Valerian Seal
    Merula,

Hold your position against the enemy, give ground where you must. In two hours I expect another courier with your positions and in four I expect you to counterattack the enemy forces. I will fall on their flank from the East and we will drive them back into the settlement.

    With regards,
    Consul Lucius Valerius Poplicola

Send this to your commander if you're able, if you are too fatigued to do so then designate it to someone you can trust, tell him we are coming.Lucius exited his tent and strode straight to the prefect, break camp, we move in an hour.
