Plot

At the beginning of the 20th century, China is in a state of crisis. The country is split into warring factions, the citizens are starving, and recent political reforms have made matters worse, not better. The ruling Qing Dynasty, led by a seven-year-old emperor and his ruthless mother, Empress Dowager Longyu (Joan Chen), is completely out of touch after 250 years of unquestioned power. With ordinary citizens beginning to revolt openly, the Qing Dynasty has created a powerful, modern army (the "New Army") to quash any rebellion. But weapons are expensive, and desperate for cash, the Qing leaders are trading anything they can get their hands on with foreign countries... and selling China

Jackie Chan is really getting serious with his films of late. I approve.

Oh? They better show the Empress Dowager and all her glory, yes I know, by 1911, she's dead. Oh and do I see Yuan Shikai on the trailer? Probably Sun Yat-sen.

I love Qing Dynasty movies, there is just something more impressive with rows upon rows of kowtowing mandarins infront of the palaces of the Forbidden City.

I felt that his turn of acting in that remake of the film called Karate Kid which had the same name as the film it was remaking and some plot similarity but no overall link beyond the obvious cash in.

He acted well in that.

Jackie's actually been wanting to do more serious roles for a while now, and has done in several Chinese films. He's a very talented actor but out here in the West he's still considered more of a comedic-Kung Fu dude so he doesn't land many serious roles. I really liked him in Little Big Soldier.

This acctually looks quite interesting.

I hope this isn't a propaganda film for communism. I wouldn't expect Jackie Chan to go so low, but who knows, Jet Li sold out when his time came.

Communism did not even show up in China at 1911... It was a product in 1920s.

Furthermore, warlordism did not happen in China until 1920s; in some ways we can say Chinese Revolution itself turned China from Zimbabwe into Somalia.

Edit: Is there one scene when Jackie Chen charge with a... Gatling?

Looks pretty good! I love Jackie Chan! I cannot say I am one for Asian history or historical films, though.
