    Default Family members vs. Generals

Okay, okay. I realize they are basically the same thing, but I noticed that at the very beginning of some campaigns not all the "characters" you start with are classified as family members, but rather are called "Generals" and don't appear on the family tree. I'm pretty sure you can marry them to princesses and bring them into the family, so what is the point of this disctinction?? Its not a big deal but it bothers me. Mostly because there really is NO difference, AND generals don't just spawn later in the game so once the original few are gone, thats it!

Can anyone explain the logic of generals to me? Also, am I the only person bugged by this?

Generals do spawn during normal gameplay. It's the Man of the Hour event when a captain wins a battle.

Not quite. Those are just captains of units who are given a chance to join your family, so they end up as family members if you select yes and stay as captains if you say no. I believe there are supposed to be mods that let you recruit generals, but I don't know.

Several mods, including mine, allow you to recruit generals. Recruited generals are non-family members unless they are subsequently adopted or married into the royal family.

Actually, no. Those are Captains who are offered for adoption to your family since they did so well on the field of battle.

As for the distinction, it's somewhat unimportant I guess, but it adds some extra depth to the game. Later on, the generals become rare and even non-existent while family members pop up from everywhere.

Also, in Stainless Steel, once you recruit a "General's Bodyguard" unit (I can't recall if it is the same in Vanilla) you get a general to go along with it, rather than a family member. It could be due to that reason. Who knows.

That's what recuitable generals are, that many mods have employed & no vanilla doesn't have that.

haha lol I never noticed this !
I just assumed that the guys who look like the one from the left (see picture) are FM's and the ones that look like the one from the right (also see picture) are generals/captains or whatever ...

yep, you are right, you don't have the option to recruit General's Bodyguard in Vanilla, the same thing in RTW, in mods like XGM you can recruit (if you have the required barracks level) General's Bodyguard that comes along with a general (general, not FM); he gets traits and stuff but he isn't shown in the family tree

My RTW must be messed up then lol ive got 7 family members and 11 generals playing as macedon.
I have no idea where all these generals are coming from lol they seem to just appear out of thin air but its handy couse i can run so many stacks at once .
I am the shadow, and the smoke in your eyes I am the ghost, that hides in the night.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
    we shall fight in the hills;
    we shall never surrender.

    " The dark is generous.
Its first gift is concealment: our true faces lie in the dark beneath our skins, our true hearts remain shadowed deeper still. But the greatest concealment lies not in protecting our secret truths, but in hiding from the truths of others.
The dark protects us from what we dare not know.
Its second gift is comforting illusion: the ease of gentle dreams in night’s embrace, the beauty that imagination brings to what would repel in the day’s harsh light. But the greatest of its comforts is the illusion that dark is temporary: that every night brings a new day. Because it’s the day that is temporary.
    Day is the illusion.
Its third gift is the light itself: as days are defined by the nights that divide them, as stars are defined by the infinite black through which they wheel, the dark embraces the light, and brings it forth from the center of its own self.
With each victory of the light, it is the dark that wins.

The dark is generous, and it is patient.
It is the dark that seeds cruelty into justice, that drips contempt into compassion, that poisons love with grains of doubt.
The dark can be patient, because the slightest drop of rain will cause those seeds to sprout.
The rain will come, and the seeds will sprout, for the dark is the soil in which they grow, and it is the clouds above them, and it waits behind the star that gives them light.
    The dark’s patience is infinite.
    Eventually, even stars burn out.

The dark is generous, and it is patient, and it always wins.
It always wins because it is everywhere.
It is in the wood that burns in your hearth, and in the kettle on the fire; it is under your chair and under your table and under the sheets on your bed. Walk in the midday sun, and the dark is with you, attached to the soles of your feet.
The brightest light casts the darkest shadow.

The dark is generous and it is patient and it always wins – but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back.
Love is more than a candle.
    Love can ignite the stars."

I never knew there is a distinction until now. The only time the general thing crosses my mind is in barbarian invasion (or Rome Total Realism? Can't remember lol) where you can recruit generals.

Non-family generals won't marry (unless you marry them to a princess) and thus won't produce little generals. Also, if your entire family is wiped-out you lose. You can have all the generals you want but you must have a family member to act as faction leader or the game ends. If you've played a lot you have likely noticed a faction go away now and then and leave several rebel territories and generals behind--this is because their family tree came to an end.
