I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

I'd rather Marian reform never happens in my campaign, because I identify with the earlier citizen-soldiers who had their own city and property to fight for much more than with those later mercenary-legionaries who only knew their general because he provided for him.
Is there a way to simulate that, through discreet and solid expansion, political innovation, or whatever, Rome succeeds both in becoming great and in avoiding impoverishing her citizens at the same time?

Uh, the post-Marian soldiers weren't mercenaries. Not unless you're also calling every single professional military force mercenary ....

I can't see much difference, except that they were hired by their own state.
I'd rather every one of my soldiers lives his own respectable life in peace, only called into service when his city enters a war.
Admittedly, I can't convince myself that this ideal practice is practicable when his city becomes an empire.

So you see any professional soldier as a mercenary. That includes all modern armed forces.

In some sense all professional armys are mercenary. They donīt have strong ties with the society and is loyalties are always close to their employer resources. Is easy maintain loyalty when you are USA or any other rich country but... What gona happen if the crisis cut the military budget from 600 billion to 100 billion? I donīt think the mercenary will fight AGAINST is former boss but, if they become unenployed, probably they sell is services to a more big wallet country (or general).

Or they'll just retire from the military and find another form of employment.
