Diplomacy with Rebels

Recently I was playing a Romani campaign and the first punic war broke out when I entered Sikilia. While I was fighting the Carthaginians, who were being super lame and refused to fight, I wanted to get Syracuse on my side, since that is historically what happened. So I saw there were no options other than bribing the rebels, which was annoying but I did it anyway. I brought in my best diplomat, and bribed Hiero to come Romani and 150,000 mnai later it worked. So the next turn Hiero died and it said "Heroic death". What in the world happened?

Moreover, is there anyway to improve diplomacy with rebels?

that is a feature of the script and it keeps stupid things from happening that cause CTDS. just think of him as KIA
