Default Rome: Total War | Lag issue

    specs-
    x800GTO (unlocked to 16 pipes)
1GB pc3200 PQI performance series RAM
    Athlon 64 2800+ @ 1.9GHz Newcastle
    80GB Seagate Barracuda HDD

I cant do a battle in a open area (e.g hills, or open grassy areas) with over 300 solders without my frames per second dropping to 32. If I seige, I still get 32. If I seige with more than 500 men I get under 20fps. (and im talking seiging a small town with a wooden palisade)

I have game fully patched (1.1-1.5) and no mods installed.

I don't know what the problem is. My computer specs:
    Nvidia 6200
    Pentium 4
    2.93 GHz
    1GB DDR Memory

It runs perfect on my computer on huge settings, but how do you unlock more pipes? Also, welcome to the forums.

    Peace,

sorry it took so long to respond. Had a problem with windows and had to reformat etc...
I'm thinking my processor may possibly be the bottleneck. However I just got my PC up and running like 20 minutes ago. I'm going to re-install the game. Should I get all the patches, or just specific ones?

only specific cards are unlockable. Such as the 6800, x800GTO, regular x800.
I believe the 6200 is unlockable. But it may only be the TURBO CACHE version of the 6200, i'm not sure. Google it and see if your 6200 is unlockable. If it is you'll be able to go from 4 pixel pipes to 8. Which should give you a relatively big boost in frames.

Thanks for the info. Also, all you need to patch are 1.2, 1.3, and 1.5. None other are really necessary, and 1.4 and 1.6 are BI only.

well I did as you told and I still get the same results. I can play all my other games just fine (BF2, FEAR oblivion etc... all at medium > high settings).
I did a custom battle with medium settings 1024x768 and large unit sizes...I did it in a open grassy area (not sure what the exact name of the area was)...and did a 5v5 battle...5 greek hoplites vs 5 units of carthage iberian infantry. and I cant seem to find a way around this low FPS.

I don't have any idea what the problem is. Maybe Lee would know. PM him, he's really good with computers.

Try downloading the newest ATI drivers for your video card, clean the old ones off using driver cleaner first (google 'driver cleaner').
Also, I may be stating the obvious but just to cover all bases you have tried turning down the game settings right? (Turning Anti Aliasing off, etc).
If not try turning each setting off one a time and see if turning one off has a dramatic impact, but update your drivers first.

I pretty much solved the issue. My "Page File" was to high. Since the game kept reverting to the page file on the HDD in big battles i'd get lag since the page file is based off the HDD and the HDD is much slower than normal memory. I set the page file lower and this solved any lag issues. However I still lag in really big battles such as a 6v6 greek hoplites v iberian inf battles on huge unit settings. But this is probably my processor doing that as my processor isnt exactly the best.
