Here are a few things that I wish CA had given some thought to when programming Napoleon Total War. Maybe they can take these into consideration for their next game. None of the things I request are very unreasonable; CA should easily be able to implement these.
- Ability to use allied ports to base / repair my fleets. Ditto for military access.
- Ability to order artillery crews to abandon their pieces and seek safety behind friendly infantry (and this option should ALWAYS be available, not only when my army has the option to retreat).
- Ability for artillery crews to use enemy artillery pieces captured on the battlefield (at least if they're not wildly different; I wouldn't necessarily expect a cannon crew to be any good with mortars, rockets or howitzers).
- Ability to choose in which direction my army retreats on the campaign map. The options could well be restricted (based on whether there are other enemy forces or fortifications nearby and a bunch of other considerations), but I should get some say in it.
- When making peace with a hostile power, I should have the option of requesting that they make peace with my protectorates as well. Similarily, there should be an option to ask another country to make peace with a third power.
- Ability to install a government type of your choice when liberating countries. They might not last long (i.e. when forcing a monarchy unto a population that firmly believes in republican ideals), but the option should exist.
- Ability to create countries from territories you presently own (i.e. without having to give them away and then retake them just so you can liberate them).
- Ability to sign a __defensive__ alliance with another country. Unlike your vanilla alliance, this would only be effective in defensive wars but not in wars they started.
- Ability to retrain existing units to gain higher experience levels. The present system allows you to raise entirely new units that have higher experience levels than troops you've already had since the beginning of the campaign. The system I have in mind would allow you to send existing units into a city that has an army staff college (or something similar) and train them up to the same level of experience that freshly recruited units get.
- Experience levels for naval units should not be tied to their hulls but to their crews. It makes no sense for me to capture a 5-chevron frigate from the French and then get to keep those 5 chevrons even when it's crewed by my inexperienced Prussian sailors.
- Normally field artillery shouldn't be able to completely demolish even a large star fort in less than 5 minutes. Make it so that forts can only be reduced by special heavy siege artillery.
- Ability to order infantry, artillery and dismounted cavalry to LIE DOWN to make them tougher targets for enemy artillery.
I add more later as I remember more things.![]()
