    Default Equality and Diversity

If we are all equal, how can we celebrate diversity?

EDIT: The citizen is part of the state, if we are all equal in front of the state, then saying we are diverse cannot be true?

I just want to know TWC's view on diversity and equality in their own country and whether either really exists.

Thanks. But, let me ask this: the citizen is part of the state, if we are all equal in front of the state, then saying we are diverse cannot be true?

Im thinking that we need something a little more substantial to get a topic going. Are we talking about intellectual diversity? Racial? Religious? Socio-Economic?
The thread was merely a question just about what I said in the OP. I think if we went on to discuss things such as Socio-Economic differences then yea, there are different people.

Tsk, tsk, how not? You're white, he's black, she's pink and I'm gold. Yet the same rules apply to all of us. Equality and diversity, there you have it!

Ok... It looks like I'll have to expand lol.

Let's put it this way, on Ideal terms we are all equal and that's why some ''social institutions'' are inherently based on a ''equality'' premise, like Law and the Judiciary system.

But other institutions, like Private Property and Education are inherently asymmetric and of course base themselves on it.

The basic principle of treating people the same is good.
The problem comes when you intervene to manufacture equality. Because then you get into philosophical questions about what Fairness is and whether it is Just to make it easier for certain classes of the population to get jobs or go to university or whatever.

Strangely enough we are all born unequal, with people having different strengths and weaknesses yet are treated equally under the law. Well, that is warped by whoever has the money to defend themselves against the monster that is the law. Hence, nicely paid lawyers came into existence to protect the rich, and perhaps the just, but the rich are their best customers.

Diversity can be intellectually stimulating, but in a lot of cases, socially inharmonious. Not all societies can afford it beyond a critical percentage.

Well equality in front of law is not true.

Different treatment is often demanded on religious ground, and those that are disabled in some way receive different treatment as well. Like the mentally instable somehow getting less punishment for their crimes because they didnt know what they where doing. As if that matters, since this would only make them more dangerous.

It's good to be diverse, but I also feel there is a reason why most nationalities have their own country. Immigrants can't expect their new country to adapt to them for example. They should just move back if they have a problem with how things work in the country they moved to.

I see your "Equality and Diversity" and I raise you "Merit and Utility."

Americans eat cows all the time but you could probably get arrested for eating your dog. In China eating dog is fine. In India eating cow is heresy. There is no equality. Humans are naturally arbitrary. Not eating animals would be reasonable if you won't eat a dog, but that's not generally the case. However we westerners find it obvious because we were raised to it.

However I'd argue a dog has more merit and utility as a companion than a cow does. In which case it seems less arbitrary.

I think people are rather diverse then equal, thats why article 1 of the Dutch law should be changed in "everybody is unique"

There will never be equality, just a fact of human flaw. No one really made fun of homosexuals in ancient Rome, now we really have low racism against germanic people than ancient romans did. People don't have nearly as much Antisemitism as even 70 years ago(in the west). Even here in the USA, during the 20's the Irish were badly discriminated, now they are the Aryan race here, as most (white) people are Irish in some shape or form. People now are discriminating Muslims and who knows, that could get worse, especially if the tea-party gets there way. Racism is an endless cycle, its just a matter of who the spinner lands on next and hope your on the winning side... Never the less, I don't support race-mixing, i think people should be a single general race, ie white, black, muslim. Race-mixing is degrading to tradition, culture, and history. it also destroys what unites peoples of the same race.

Now for Class separation, well simply the richer and the smarter and the more civilized will always be treated better, that's been a fact since civilization itself. Unless anarchists or communists get there way (which is worse than hell itself), that is just a fact of life.

The state is supposed to treat us equally (we aren't literally equal), diversity is being proud of our differences. We are diverse regardless of what the state says. We are not equal despite what the state says, but we wish to be treated equally and that how the state works: democracy, hurray.

Diversity as a virtue is crap.

When I was a kid the idea was 'the melting pot' basically where we all became one people based on the ideals of the US.

Now its become multi-culturalism which weakens a society and is just a fancy word for self segregation.
