    Default Explain to me, please...

How do the adoption and "Man of the Hour" events work? I know that Man of the Hour is when a captain wins a battle (or two) and the game promotes him to a general, but what is up with adoption? It just happens so randomly, and the person adopted is someone that has never been in the game prior to that event. Can someone explain this to me?

Adoption is random, you should get a spike in adoption after a bunch of family members die though.

Or when you conquer a bunch of new territories, sicne it appears the game expects you to have a FM in every city.

As far as I know, both events happen when the family member to owned settlements ratio become too low.

The adoption is so-called 'Minor Nobilities' that wish to become a higher nobility, as in the ruling authority of the state and thus automatically promoted to generals. They are generally minor nobles controlling some lands and farms and have an estate or so, and wish to enter your family - As is the case with the offer to your princesses' hand from a random individual. These people are not important enough to appear in the game by name as they are not (yet) generals.

The game can go crazy with adoptions however. Apparently if the heir or FL is short on sons the game will spam adoption offers every turn - kinda annoying.

Sometimes (I have it happen at least once in every game - it just happened about turn 50) an adoption will fail. So why bother with that and what is the reason for failure? I know it was not because a general was recruited or a settlement lost. And, I am also almost certain that when it happened I did not have a new family member coming of age.

This is because the adopted general happens to die on the same turn that you agree to his adoption

I have had the same thing happen in the Teutonic Campaign as the TO and it would often spam that bogus "guy dies" junk whenever the FL or FH, usually FH, tries to recruit anyone. I think that is the only time that has happened to me, though.

To get "Man of the Hour" your captain has to win against the odds, not merely win a battle. You can create bad odds by making your captain the leader of a small force and putting the rest of the army under another general. You then come onto the battlefield with the other guys as an allied force. Even if your total force outnumbers the enemy, you get "Man of the Hour" because you personally commanded a much smaller force than the enemy.

I don't think you need to win against odds.

It actually depends on the ratio of generals to settlements. If you are very low on generals, even a close victory can trigger man of the hour. If you have a normal ratio, you need a clear victory or heroic victory. If the ratio is high enough, you can't get man of the hour no matter what.
