I recently modded my game to have the shield wall formation, and it's not really working, defensively it works like a charm, but when I send my guys out to attack, instead of slowly advancing, at the last moment they rush ahead.

Spear wall is meant to be used as a defensive formation.
You're thinking of the Greek/Roman shield wall formations, in which they used to push soldiers down with their shields and stick their spears into them while advancing slowly. This didn't happen in Medieval times and thus the shield wall formation is meant solely for defensive purposes. It's suicide when it comes to offensive purposes.

Jon had taken Donal and Benjens advice to heart: Sam may be fat and pathetic, but he is still a member of the watch, and one of the few black brothers who isn't a rapist or thief. (out of context, this sounds ridiculously racist)

Lots of M2TW mods use shield_wall successfully as both defensive and offensive formation (for punching holes in enemy formations t.ex). Have a look At TA:TW.
It is imperfect, you have to take them out of shield wall to properly charge, but most spearmen units would take a while to reform proper.
I'd suggest just giving spearmen a tighter formation to begin with and square / schiltron formation as seen fit (assuming your already added shield wall in the EDU), and really just defending - guard on. attack just take em off guard mode.
Thanks, I'm modding it right now +rep.
Apologies for hijacking the thread, butis it possible to allow infantry to form a wedge?
@Goldentoad. It's not possible, horses only i'm sorry to say, although it was used by the old Roman armies it was not implemented into this game.
@Moon, that's unfortunate, I would love to be able to drive through enemy formations with my swordsmen, or even with Hastati or Principes!
