Default Windows 7 and Rome total war

Would Rome total war run on a windows 7 laptop, or is it only compatible with older OS's?

Good to know. Rome total war is one of my favorite games of all time, glad to see I will be able to run it on my new laptop.

The beauty of Rome is that it can be run on pretty much anything nowadays; even my little EEE PC can.

The only issue you might experience is with the 1.5 Patch. I eventually gave up with trying to install it on W7 and bought the Gold Edition from Steam which installed it by default.

    Thread moved to technical area.

It runs well on Windows 7 but make sure you have updated version of Direct X 9.0c drivers otherwise you will get battle CTDs and turn off UAC while installing the game otherwise you installation will be hindered by it.

Ok. Where would you check to see if you have updated direct x 9.0c drivers? And what is UAC, and when/where do you get the option to turn it off?

Any chance that it will install fine without doing any of the above mentioned steps? Ive read online that some people got RTW installed and running perfect on W7 without changing anything.

Some get lucky, some don't. If you're planning on playing mods, a little preinstall work will help.

Ok, I probably wont be modding much. The only mod I may download and use for RTW is for unlocking all factions for campaign mode.

When I first starting using Vista I was told to

    1) Keep the install away from the 'program files' folders
    2) Turn off User Account Control (UAC).

I did both of these (for my Vista and 7 machines) and have had no problems with either PC and R:TW.

If you don't do these then expect problems. You don't have to use mods for these to be needed as the game will save your options elsewhere and also save games and replays of custom and historic battles.

It also might help to run it in Xp service pack 3 compatibility mode.

I've never had to run R:TW or R:TW based mods with XP compatablity mode - I know some people that have had problems do so though.

My UAC has been disabled since I installed Win 7 almost two years ago.

Same here - it was one of the first things I did with my Windows 7 system.
