How to Rally?

Hate to do this: I am afraid it is something simple I am doing (or not doing) as in the "why won't the city gates open" thread.

Here is the problem: When I have troops that rout, I can not seem to get them to recover using the general's "rally" function. At first I just clicked on this when a unit routed: No go. So then I tried getting the general over to the routing troops after having activated rally: No joy. Next I tried getting the general over to the routing unit and then activating rally: No good. Next I tried activating rally while the routing unit was actually intermixed with the general's unit as the former bolted away from the front line: Still no success.

So, exactly what key/mouse clicks and actions, in what order, do I need to do in order to recover a routing unit using the General's "Rally" ability?

Depends how badly mauled the unit has been. Some units will just not rally if they are very low in number. But units will rally faster if your general is nearer when you press the rally button.

I don't think this function can stop routing units. It simply gathers the active units around the general. It can be used as a panic button, or in order to concentrate on a focal point troops wandering aimlessly...

Units will not rally while they are still surrounded by enemies; wait until they are significantly away from the melee before attempting to rally.
I also use the rally function to boost the morale of my troops every now and then.

O.K., didn't realize that. I will try what you suggest. Do I need to keep the general near the fleeing troops after pressing rally, or does it matter?

Heh, heh. Markus never told me about this one. Wonder when he'll get around to it...

@ Garbarsardar --> I am pretty sure you can rally routed troops; because Markus did tell me about this one. Of course, since he is AI driven, he *could* be in cahoots with the enemy AI.

Im my last battle of my Brutii campaign before switching to play Carthage I had a very close battle over a bridge.

Much use of the rally function.

I saw troops affectted by how close the general was. He was always blowing his trumpet trying to get someone or other to rally.

I believe it works...but as already said...your routers just cannot be too close to the enemy and there comes a point when some units just dont want to recover. I cannot be more exact.
