    I dont think you can. only thing you can do is to read the environment on he campaign map, cause the game will (sort of) mimic it. for example, if you are venice and an army stands on the bridge, when you attack it, it wil be a bridge battle.

    I believe it is only possible in Rome Total War and BI.

    You can't. Without doubt one of the worst part of the game because once you're in the battle, you have to withdraw, with takes too long (and afterward, all your stacks retreat).

    thats why you save before you move your army to attack. there are some terrible maps out there, that cost you more time moving your army then thr actual fighting
