Default Rome Total War - change LOD

    Hi,

I have tried to change this by editing the following files:

    • descr_items.txt

multiplied all values by 100, for instance:

    type scale_soldier
    lod
    max_distance 200.0
    model_rigid scale_soldier_high.cas

    to

    type scale_soldier
    lod
    max_distance 20000.0
    model_rigid scale_soldier_high.cas
    • descr_grass.txt

set "falloff x" to "falloff 0.05"

    The file states:
falloff is how early the grass fades out, higher the falloff the earlier the fade
However, none of this did anything at all:

Does anyone know how to push the LOD back further?

If you are just referring to the grass you can change that in the preferences.txt with this entry: GRASS_DISTANCE:75

In the past when I was taking some screens for some RSII previews I would change it from 75 to 500 or similar. There is a big hit on performance but as I was using the movie camera function for battle replays that did not matter so much.

This pushes grass fade out farther, but what about unit detail? With current settings the units in the top one-third of the screen look like sticks instead of soldiers.

While an old post and even older game, does anybody know how to push back that unit detail fade?

Unsure of how to adjust the distance, but I'm pretty sure you can completely eliminate it by getting rid of the sprite entry in descr_model_battle (effectively making the unit not use a sprite) ..

Worked like a charm, thank you. However, as you said, it is not usable (at least not with RS II). I get 6 fps with everything maxed then at 750 instead of 75. Maybe in 10 years I can play this thing again at decent framerates

I doubt it - one of the problems is the game engine is so old as it was from 2005 (if not before). It does not know what a second core is let alone a quad-core! Many of the features on recent or fairly recent graphic cards are simply not used.

In some ways the game may play better on an older PC than a current one - but it needs to be a high spec old PC!

If you have an nVidia card one thing you can try to do is to override or enhance the in-game AA using the nVidia Control Panel. I used to use a utility called nHancer but when nVidia did a major change to how it's drivers worked the author of nHancer did not have the time to make the necessary changes.

I already use NV Inspector (the de-facto successor to nHancer, although from another guy) to force 8x SGSSAA (supersampling antialiasing). Works like a charm. Before, I had a E6600@3 GHz and I got about 70% increase in performance when switching to my current CPU due to higher clocks and IPC. I know that RTW doesn't support more than one core/thread, but I hope they can increase clock speed (and performance per clock) even further. Maybe at 8-10 GHz Roma Surrectum will be playable

The last update for NV Inspector appears to have been December 2010. Is that corret?

1.9.5.5 came out in April 2011. But since then there have been no changes.
