yes, what would not be normal would be if they started showing up at different ages ... 12 16 18
But seriously it programmed to mature the princes at 14

it is not legal today...
but it is "normal" in those times...
I'm pretty sure it is legal to be a prince at any age these days....

Basicaly, 1000 years ago, a 14yr old would be like many of todays 28 year olds![]()
Except that, in at least some cases, a prince at the age of 14 was not of age. For instance, Sicily in the 12th century. Roger I died in 1101, and his youngest son, Simon Guiscard, ascended to the throne. However, he was born in 1093, therefore only 8 years or so of age, and he died in 1105. That is when Roger I's other son, Roger (II), took over. He was born in 1095. His mother actually held the reigns of power until 1112AD when he came of age, so he must have been 17-18 when he finally took over proper. The princes in-game might be too young to be considered of-age, so 14...
Not that they wouldn't be princes at 14, they just wouldn't be of age. Alas, the game can't exactly mirror that aspect of history, where a relative, possibly the mother, rules for a brief period until the heir is considered the appropriate age to be allowed to be in charge proper. And trust me, you don't want to mess with the ages of the characters at the start and alter when they come of age...the King of Sicily (should be Count in 1100) is already 61 (not sure if that was his true age). It could be awkward if he died before his sons came of age...

Have some rep for that post Kaidonni![]()
I remember reading somewhere that medieval children were considered adults at the age of 20-21, but i'm no expert on the subject. Anyways, I like the idea of a 14-year old general crushing enemy armies...
Thanks.
I've been reading A Brief History of the Normans, getting in the mood for my Sicily campaign. Checking it again, their mother, Adelaide, left in 1113AD. There's also http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/SICI...#_Toc284338760, which says their mother ruled in a joint-regency with another man, Robert de Bourgogne.
In today's time we confuse the the matter of age that is manhood, titles and rights ... thinking all comes at one moment together.
This is false. When the "man" is 14 as in this game ... it just that he is reconised as an adult . He begins his training in his craft, which usaully will take him 5 to 8 years just to be a journayman and get away from his master and be on their own. Then they spend the 10 to 15 becoming maters of that craft.
The age of 18 or sometimes 20 comes only in reference when one inheritance land and those titles and responsibilities are upon place on you.

Oh, indeed. I'm considering changing it temporarily so that I can pretend that the leader of Sicily isn't recognised as a king in the beginning. Then, after taking so many settlements, I can change his title to King from Count.
I digress, though. Back to the topic at hand.![]()
