Faction heir w/o family tree

Is there any way to select a faction heir that isn't from the family tree?

Nope. In fact I think you lose the game if all your family members die.

Ah well. I know that if all of the ruling family die then the it switches to whatever the heir's family is. At the moment my ruler won't produce an heir and for some reason his daughters won't marry.

Well, as long as you have male family members you'll have a Faction Heir and Faction Leader.

if you take enough settlements you will be offered adoptions after ratio 1.5:1 (cities:family members) unless the only living male has already 4 children
