What just happened?

I was England(vanilla) and had France and Britain. When the Popeface called a crusade on Toulouse, which I controlled, and sent me a letter to join it(I also got a letter saying the pope died). Papal elections happened the same turn, and I got my pope voted in, then I get a letter canceling the crusade mission as well as a crusade cancelled message saying the crusade target(me) had "returned to the fold".

What happened was that you were excommunicated by the last pope, and he called a crusade on you. However, he died the next turn, which means you were reconciled. Since you were no longer ex-commed, the crusade was called off.

For what though? And why did I get a Crusade mission on my own city?

You probably didn't follow one of the popes missions. and it probably happened in the period right after the pope died and reconciled you(only non-excommed factions can join crusades) and when the new pope appeared and called it off.

What happened was that you were excommed, the Pope called a crusade on Toulouse, which he is hard coded to do if the owner is excommed. The Pope died, and when you were reconciled the crusade was called off because crusaders cannot attack non excommed catholic factions.

So Toulouse really is the number 1 excomm target in the game? I always wondered why the pope kept calling such suicidal crusades against the biggest castle in western Europe.
