    Default The EU

My question is this, what is the opinion of the EU amongst the TWC members? I ask, because it seems to me that Britain and Finland (and maybe Greece now as well) seem to be the only countries that contain significant numbers of people who criticise the way the current EU operates, which seems rather odd to me considering how poorly the EU has been implemented and how stupid some of its decisions are. Some peope also seem to defend every action of the EU as if it cannot do anything wrong and all their decisions are perfect, which is again very odd to me.

I am not entirely opposed to the idea of the EU myself - closer co-operation and a bit more integration in Europe is a very good thing, but i do not like the way the EU is currently implemented and unless some massive changes/reforms are made I can't see it surviving entirely intact for more than a few years. If it were possible to disband the EU and start the whole thing again from scratch and plan it out a bit better this time that would be my ideal situation, but i doubt it would be possible to disband without causing major damage. So what does eveybody else think of the EU in its current form?

I wonder your 2917 posts are a waste or not; clearly anyone who is in TWC long enough would realize most of TWC members are anti-Eu except a few French members who want a United Europe.

And what about us mostly pro-EU Irish members?

I'd like to be counted among these "few french members" as one who wants a United Europe. Thanks.

Surprisingly there's a quite a large community of Pro-EU UK members on this forum. Generally the pro-EU members seem to be less... 'vocal' in their opinions on the subject. The poll so far indicates that the majority generally want to see reform not dissolution.

Hmm at least i have a french first name.

I really like it the way it could be - as long as it isn´t perfect there´s always space to make it better. Don´t know if it´s necessary to tell the germans how much salt has to be in their bread. Also i don´t know why they build a taskforce to figure out why older female movie-actors earn less money than younger ones. Probably things like that are most annoying - but i´m german so it´s nothing new for me. I mean some basic rules for everyone to have some equal rights in europe and some more regional (not just national) freedom could be nice. Some things simply don´t work if there´s no EU - especially in this more and more globalized world. One single nation isn´t worth that much nowadays.
In the end i like being able to travel from portugal to estonia without any passport control and much wasted times at the borders. It´s also easier to settle down/work somewhere else without messing with national rules/laws.

It is/was a fantastic idea but it was incorrectly implemented both as the EEC and its current incarnation as the EU.

    Freetrade-zone nothing more.

The Eurocrats are trying to create a USE against the will of the people and at the cost of the total collapse of the European economy (which they will uses as an excuse to vastly increase their power at the expense of sovereignty of states).

I think the concept involved is having your cake, and eating it; EU members may have to decide that maintaining the life style they have come accustomed to requires the sacrifice of some of their autonomy, and we may have reached the pivotal point where they may have to choose to jump one way or the other.

In my opinion, the EU is a money sponge. Sucking up good money better spent on more important things, like education.

I don't like it very much at all. I think it is a good idea with good intentions, but has been wrongly implemented.

Why German, when English is by far the more widely spoken language? Sure, there are more Germans in the EU than there are British, but there are more English speakers in the EU than there are Germans.

And yes, I am inclined to agree with a German dominated EU. German or French, I haven't made my mind up. I can't stand the thought of every little state in this superpower trying to get their say. It would be bureaucratic nonsense on an international level.

    sure, make it a dual german/english common language in the EU;
the ideal hierarchy i am thinking of is Germany at the centre and all other EU states as tributaries, kinda like how US is in the centre of the NATO and all other countries are appendages and tributaries, or if u prefer, my campaign where i'm the holy roman empire and all catholic factions except the pope are vassals

That's King GreenBottles to you, sir.

I'd just like to hear Exarch's opinion - I think (nearly) everyone should be able to voice their opinions, and I'd like to hear his.

As I've said together, one cannot piece all the European countries under one flag, under one structure. Europe is still a diverse continent and it should remain that way. The EU should be dismantled down to a very loose organisation that facilitates common economic zones between European countries, fosters some cross border programs maybe, and facilitates easier travel between European countries, but more than that is not needed in my opinion. A EU president, army, government should be forbidden. I won't even mention the dreaded Euro. I hope with this crisis this is realised and the people in the EU governments take the right step for Europe and dismantle this failing project.

It's the natural way of things. You'd better just accept it, because European integration is an inevitability. Just as Celtic tribes slowly formed kingdoms, which formed England, Wales and Scotland, and finally the UK, so will the various tribes of Europe band together under one banner and form the United States of Europe.
