    Default Guard

Hi, I got the mod working with steam.. And wow. I'm impressed with this game... Almost everything out of it is appealing to me. Great work with the mod all of you!

There's one majore thing that I really want to change though. Is there anyway to make the enemy not use "guard". It's terrible. I love these battles just it's not fun seeing the enemies units formed up perfectly... Sideways. It's a minor thing, but it's annoying.

Anyways thank you again for this mod!

Why not select the units that have Guard enabled and disable it by selecting the Guard button?

I think he means the enemy units, im not sure if you can turn "guard" off. If you could it would probably be for both the AI and player.

Sorry I missed the enemy part of the question. Like Duke said; the guard mode should be able to be turned off, however you'll have to wait until someone who knows how replies.

The problem is that the AI doesn't do a good job of keeping formation as it is. Turn off gaurd mode for heavy infantry in the AI formations and the player could draw out individual phalanxes from a line by running a skirmisher unit into them and then running away.

Problem with turning it on is the enemy attacking you sideways.

Happened to me when fighting with spartan city hoplites against enemy Hypaspists for example. It just feels not right if the do no damage because attacking in a 45 degree angle instead of straight on.

It makes me wonder if there is a mod for better BAI. I dont think this is a problem unique to RTRVII.

Whose AI formations are you using in VII?

It's one of those things that has bugged me for years! It happens often using several different mods, but I can't remember if it also happened with vanilla. It also happens when I attack the AI with units in guard mode. I've always assumed it was some kind of hardcoded bug. It's a shame really...a bit more polishing and the RTW engine could've been so much better.
Thank you to all of the RTR Team.

Hey guys thanks for replying. Truthfully even though i could draw one enemy phalanx out with a skirmisher unit i wouldn't. I'm the type who enjoys slow play and making things difficult for myself to enjoy the game play better. So I know that for myself I wouldn't take advantage of a faulty AI.

Though still I weighed the options... and phalanxes still come at me even though their guard is on. I don't care so much for guard for the phalanx though. Its the hoplites and roman style fighting units that catch my nerve when they turn sideways in a battle.

As DeWitt8 said: It doesn't feel right when a Hypaspists unit is fighting sideways..

My only complaint is that the default options for unit behavior (skirmish, guard, fire at will) changes so much, depending if one is attacking or defending (and on siege as well)... since I play with minimal UI (to be able to see the beauty of VII in my tiny little screen ), it's hard to tell what are the default options, and it's annoying to notice after a unit routs, that the reason that your units are not chasing it it's because they are in guard mode, when in the battle you played before as an attacker they were without the guard mode by default... is it possible to "standardize" the default unit behaviors?

BTW, I have no problem with the guard mode enabled for the AI... it's actually rather challenging when they're facing the other way sometimes, not letting you do a hammer and anvil with cav. I just wish that it would be always that they were with guard mode enabled or not.
