    Default Federal States

This is reference to a comment made by exarch about federations, in the Delhi blast thread.

Let us examine few points in a bit detail.

In essence, Federation is a Nation which gives some autonomy to states but eventually calls the shots. We can consider the India model.

When states joined the Indian union back then, I bet they had little idea that there is no going back. In the course of Indian history, three states have asked for autonomy, to form independent nations. They are The Tamil nation, Kashmir, and Khalistan (Sikh nation). But as known universally, feds do not entertain such things, they were crushed.

So, here we can form a debate. Are Federal States cause for the turmoil.

    Note:
Please keep this debate civil. Any breach, and it's report to the moderators.

This is a thread from an Academy.

A federation is a system of Government where power is shared among different political units. This is opposed to a unitary state, where power is held at one single place.

You appear to be looking at the matter exclusively in the context of India, something not many people here will have detailed knowledge of. But when you talk about Khalistan, do you refer to the occupation of the Golden Temple where Sikh extremists used the place as a base to attack local minorities? No wonder that didn't end in statehood.

There are a variety of federations that internally have always been stable and peaceful. Australia, Germany, for example.

    great thread, m_1512, +rep

the problem i see as to federation is that it's the common tendency for ppl to want to accumulate more power and resources and in a federation, this is done by individuals in the central government granting more power to themselves, or simply taking that power.
such is the case in Australia, the federal gov. still retains some far reaching amount of power when it comes to states' rights; any thought of secession in any federated state would be unthinkable and would likely guarantee force of arms to maintain federal unity.

Political culture, racial homogeneity and shared history tends to help stability.

unfortunately, these are sorely lacking in areas as diverse as the eurozone and the Indian subcontinent, therefore conflict in these cases are inevitable.

I personally think a much greater move towards Federalisation is the only thing that is going to stop the UK breaking apart, and its a move I would fully support. Even with devolved assemblies in Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland, Britain still remains one of the most centralised states in the Western world.

I don't know too much about Indian politics, but there are plenty of successful Federations out there.

just out of curiosity, would you also support greater integration of the UK into the EU? why and why not?

Not the EU in its current state. Not nearly enough democratic accountability and its a bureaucratic mess.

I am not opposed to further European integration as an idea, but the EU isn't going the right way about it in my opinion.

@Ferrets: The Indian model was stated as it was the one discussed in other thread.
Basically, this is for all to have a light and healthy debate.

P.S. Exarch is opposed to federations.
