    Default Your best battle.

Ive seen these threads on all the other forums so figured id make one on here to .
Also i wanted to brag about the battle i just won to make myself feel good .

I just completed a campaign on vh/vh playing as the julii for the past 15 or so turns id been playing a gurilla warfare campaign ambushing every roman army i could find to remove the support for the SPQR then i got a bit arrogant and sent my main army in alone against them without scouting first.
Major mistake i hit there army and find much to my horror 2 scipii and 2 brutii stacks hidden in the forest around it so i go from an even battle to fighting 5 full stacks all battle hardened with 1 stack of my own.

My stack consisting of 5 units of archers 4 of legion cavalry 6 legionary cohorts 3 pratorians 1 urban and my general.

And since ive fiddled my settings a bit all 5 enemy stacks came in at once.

So im staring at the great wall of romans and thinking to myself me im a dead man.

So i figured if im gonna lose this battle ( ive lost 0 battles in the entire campaign up to this point ) ill take down as many of them as possible so i fell back into a forested area the brutii stacks were heavy on cavalry so i figured my first danger is a mass cavalry charge and trees help me to brake that up and i was right 13 units from them plus 9 more scipii and 6 SPQR ( generals ) launched themself at me so i figured well they can overwhelm me if i hold my ground so i sent my cavalry out wide had my infantry and missile units focus fire on the generals and ploughed my cavalry straight into the scipii wave and in a stroke of sheer luck i took down every general they had in the space of 15 seconds causing a massed route from which maybe 5 cavalry escaped alive out of the entire combined force.
Once that was done i was left facing probly 3 and a half full stacks worth of infantry and missile units .
So i went with the only option available to me ( i dont believe in hiding in a corner ).
So i broke my army up sent the archers with my pratorians at the main spqr force being the old units my pratorians tore through them without a fight while my archers provided fire support.
The rest of my men formed a thin line and ploughed into the main enemy force alone and pinned them down in a long fight theyd have been driven in by numbers but my pratorians fresh from the slaughter of the SPQR hit the enemy in the flank and my archers fired into the centre of the mass causing huge casulties and a huge moral shock using fire arrows and without a clue how id done it there entire force broke to be rode down by my cavalry of the total 8500 ish enemy men less then 1000 escaped the battle alive i lost the best part of 2/3 of my men durin that battle most of which was the legion's fixed the enemy in place.

But considering the odds of me even surviving that battle im proud of myself and more importantly im proud that my legionaries stood there ground and were cut down without even wavering 2 units were down to less then 10 men and they were still not wavering my men were determined to stand there ground and die rather then retreat .

I am the shadow, and the smoke in your eyes I am the ghost, that hides in the night.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
    we shall fight in the hills;
    we shall never surrender.

    " The dark is generous.
Its first gift is concealment: our true faces lie in the dark beneath our skins, our true hearts remain shadowed deeper still. But the greatest concealment lies not in protecting our secret truths, but in hiding from the truths of others.
The dark protects us from what we dare not know.
Its second gift is comforting illusion: the ease of gentle dreams in night’s embrace, the beauty that imagination brings to what would repel in the day’s harsh light. But the greatest of its comforts is the illusion that dark is temporary: that every night brings a new day. Because it’s the day that is temporary.
    Day is the illusion.
Its third gift is the light itself: as days are defined by the nights that divide them, as stars are defined by the infinite black through which they wheel, the dark embraces the light, and brings it forth from the center of its own self.
With each victory of the light, it is the dark that wins.

The dark is generous, and it is patient.
It is the dark that seeds cruelty into justice, that drips contempt into compassion, that poisons love with grains of doubt.
The dark can be patient, because the slightest drop of rain will cause those seeds to sprout.
The rain will come, and the seeds will sprout, for the dark is the soil in which they grow, and it is the clouds above them, and it waits behind the star that gives them light.
    The dark’s patience is infinite.
    Eventually, even stars burn out.

The dark is generous, and it is patient, and it always wins.
It always wins because it is everywhere.
It is in the wood that burns in your hearth, and in the kettle on the fire; it is under your chair and under your table and under the sheets on your bed. Walk in the midday sun, and the dark is with you, attached to the soles of your feet.
The brightest light casts the darkest shadow.

The dark is generous and it is patient and it always wins – but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back.
Love is more than a candle.
    Love can ignite the stars."

    Your total kills?

My best battle recently was in IB SAI was me, Armenian ad hoc cavalry army, some 12 units, most being medium HA/cata crossovers. I faced five half stacks of Roman troops who had surrounded me. I ended up getting nearly 3.5 thousand kills while losing about 400 (which was half my army).

i dunno about my best... i'm torn between these four.

there have been defensive seiges where they (rome/macedon/egypt) attack me (rebels)with a full stack and i'm defending with only a few militia hoplites. with stone walls if they besiege from a certain angle the walls end up killing almost all of them before they get to the center, so i win...

once against my dad in a multiplayer battle i defeated a full spartan hoplite stack with only galic forrester warbands in a defensive seige

once, just to test the cav-vs-pike advantage is stuck a solid ring of potus bronze sheilds against 7 full stacks of cataphracts, and the pikes won... it was just funny.

and once (this is probably the most epic) i was playing as germania (vanilla rtw). romans besieged pergannum with two mixed stacks. pergannum itself was defended with 5-7 units of gothic cav, but i had a massive reinforcement army with 5 berserkers, mixed heavy axemen and night raiders, and a couple units of gothic cav. i slammed into the one roman army from the back as they were pushing for the center while my gothic cavalry ran a suicide charge into the other. i sent the berserkers to carve a path to the second army (now holding the town center) where they fought (and died) to the death. the zerks kept re-setting the center time thingie which gave me time for the axes to hit the second army, which was pretty terrified by this time so when my remaining gothic cav hit them from behind they fled. in the end i had no zerks, few axes, and about 2 units of gothic cavalry, but the romans had no-one. hurrah.

I've done a few battles I was proud of, but here's one battle and screenshot of a defense.

    - I had 5-ish cavalry units and 1 Sacred Band infantry holding a town that only had wooden walls. I was against Egypt and they had 2-3 phalanx infantry, 2 chariots, 3-4 other infantry and some missile including an Onager. I set my units up with the Sacred Band holding the gates and the cavalry holding the first breach. The Sacred Band held for a while until some of the phalanx unit came in at the end and took them down to 30 men. While that happened my cav got overwhelmed by infantry and then had to pull back from the last phalanx. So a handful of infantry and one phalanx unit got in and proceeded to tear into my Sacred Band from behind routing them. At that point I had killed about 600 or so troops and lost close to 400 of my own. Then I cheated and just reset the town square every couple minutes until I won, lol.

This would be a rock formation I found, and since it was close to 2-1 I figured I'd use it.

They sent almost all of their troops at the left side which left my right doing mostly nothing the whole time (Except the cavalry that I used to flank them.) I believe the reason I did this was that they had some phalanx units which destroy most Roman units.

Anyways, here's a screenshot of after the battle.

Figured it out, it's the curse filter that blocked the images, lol..

Haha that is an EASY answer. Unit scale huge.

I shot a mini video and reviewed it when I saw this. It was one of my best battles. I launched the attack, so I was able to scout their units before heading into battle. The red bar literally took up 99% of the bar.

    Me: Scipii

    8 Equite Groups (108 * 8)
    4 Family Members ( ~ 56 * 4)
    4 Hastati (160 * 4)
    Two Roman Archers (160 * 2)

Army Size = 2048 (relatively small for huge scale)

    Opponents

    Julii - First Army
    3 Equite Groups (108 * 3)
    7 Hastati (160 * 7)
    4 Principes (160 * 4)
    2 Triarii (160 * 2)
    3 Family Members (~ 56 * 3)
    3 Velite (160 * 3)
    2 Roman Archers (160 * 2)

    +

    Julii - Second Army
    2 Cavalry Auxilia (108 * 2)
    3 Hastati (160 * 3)
    1 Principes (160 * 1)
    1 Triarii Depleted (~ 68)
    1 Family Member (~56)

    + Brutii - First Army
    3 Family Members (~ 56 * 3)
    4 Principes (160 * 4)
    5 Hastati (160 * 5)
    3 Triarii (160 * 3)
    1 Cavalry Auxilia (108 * 1)
    1 Velite (160 * 1)

    TOTAL: 6708

The battle lasted ~ 15 minutes (?) If I remember correctly. I purely used my cavalry, only using my infantry as bait. Surround, charge. Surround, charge. Each army came in one after the other, being annihilated.

    End Battle Results:
I forgot the exact numbers, but ...
    Me: ~ 6300 killed. Lost around ~ 300 men. Survivors (wounded), I ended up losing ~ 250.
    Julii - First Army: ~ 3100 dead. ~ 45 kills.
    Julii - Second Army: ~ 850 dead. ~ 55 kills.
    Brutii - 2300 dead. ~ 150 kills. (cavalry exhaustion).

My best battle was with egypt vs pontus. They needed 2700 man to stand a chance against my 1200 men army.(5 leader chariot archers, 3 chariot archers, 2 bowmen and 7 nile spearman). They had two nearly full stacks containing scythed chariots, spears, peltast, archers and heavy cavalry and 2 generals.

My only losses were some chariots because of them shooting at me and because i charged the generals.
I just had to sit and wait with my infantry while i slaugthered them with my chariot archers. Their ammo is huge!

well, i belive my greatest victory in SP campaign was, when my 17 legionary cohorts (i believe i was playing with julii, it was over an year ago, but i still remember main course of battle) and 3 units of archer auxilia, all freshly trained vs 5 full-stack armys of romans (most of them were early legionaries) and one almost full stack of romans (i believe there was 2 units missing). at that time i was already in war with all other romans, i had conquered most of scipii territory and rome, but still somehow managed to keep brutii neutral (mostly by offering some conquered territories from scipii). at some point, brutii asked me huge ammount of cash and few cities, wich i refused and i declared war. unfortunately i decided to move one of my armys (the same army as i described), wich was attacking scipii to attack brutii territory next to it. turn ended, in next turn i was moving deeper into enemy territory, but 3 brutii armys blocked my way and i couldnt move (are was in france) and worst part was- brutii and scipii formed alliance. i ended the turn and suddenly im surrounded by 6 armies?! i was really suprised by that, since i have never seen AI gathering so much armies to attack one of mine. 1 of them was scipii army, that was following me, but i didnt care about them until now.
okay, so i was trapped, but luckily i noticed, that there was only one archer unit in whole that bunch and only few units of cav, so when they attacked me, i tough "what the hell, lets do this, if im going to lose, lets kill as many of them as possible".
basically my battle plan was them to attack my legionaires and also let archers rain doom on them. i formed up somewhat noob circle: i placed all my units on big blob basically (i know, not the best strategy), but i did checked, if my units werent together with their backs and i placed my archers in middle of this blob. so, AI grouped up and charged my blob: as i hoped, my legionaires were able to crush their centers (3 armies were grouping up 1 side, 3 on other) and spread out from middle to hold AI in place, while 2 spare legionaire units and archers rushed out from cap generated by my victorious units and attacked their backs. their archer unit actually worked against AI by killing AI troops. but in the end, i still dont know how, i won without getting any of my units routed, even tough i lost 3/4 out of my troops. that was very insane and funny battle, but hey, that proves, what will happen when you group your units to attack a blob and let your center be too weak.
believe it or not, but thats how it is... still amazed by many aspects of that battle.

I don't know the specifics, but my best SP battle was ~ 7k enemy units. They had multiple armies and converged on my sole army that had lay siege to Arretium? (I played Britannia). Managed to kill the whole lost losing ~ 650 men. I had 2200 men. The due fact that they had armies everywhere made it harder to keep people alive. But I was pretty pleased with myself.

I was defending Seleucia as the Seleucids against Egypt and Armenia.
My army was composed almost completely by hoplites militia and the enemy was overwhelming so I deployed all the troops in the city centre.
I let the enemies broke the door while my archers were shooting at them. Then the enemy got stuck in the streets near the city square against my hoplites. I lost 17 men and killed about 3500 enemies.

EDIT: Also this battle was fantastic

i used to have some pretty epic battles on rome but i cant really remember them anymore. i started a new campaign as scipii the other day, im about 40 years in and only quite big one ive had where i was quite pleased with myself was against carthage i took the city between modern day tunis and tripoli and they retaliated by sending a full army at me with 2 elephant units in it.

first things first i destroyed the ram before it could let all hell come in then the elephants had come into range so i fired my flaming arrows at them and drove them mad watching them charge around killing their allies. eventually the elephants died or fled and the only ways remaining for attack were by siege tower or ladder so i moved my legionary cohorts to the points theyd arrive at and killed them as they came up. my archers were shooting at their skirmishers below.

once the floor below was clear and all their infantry were on the walls engaged. i moved my auxilia to the bottom of the ladder and siege tower and my mecenary hoplites to the outside of the gate doing a phalanx formation inviting the cavalry to attack. but as the last infantryman died they fled. i had about 900 kills to roughly 150

The most epic battle I fought so far is against the Egyptians just outside Memphis. This was the biggest battle I had so far, involving 8,000 men. The Egyptians had many elite chariots and spearmen, so it was a very tough battle to crack. I also had to fight their two armies one right after another, since my reinforcements arrived late. What I did was use my archers and javaliners to go after their spearmen, while my cavalry interrupts any of their chariot charges against my missile units. My cavalry also go around and charge their missile units, while avoiding their spearmen, which are usually just inches away. I had to pause so many times to get these right.

It was a very tough fight until my reinforcement arrived. By the end of the battle my whole cavalry force was pretty much eliminated. My general almost died (only 15 horsemen left). Most of my missile units got protected. My spearmen saw very little action b/c they were so slow. They never got near the enemy chariots and eventually I had them fight the enemy spearmen head on instead.

Best kills to death ratio is this one. Originally this group was a border guard of over 2,000 men. I beat them back, killing 1,000 of them (no screen shot). Many of the losses were elite chariots and desert axemen. This battle finishes them off. Without their elite troop supporting them, this battle was a total slaughter.

Here is a picture of the general responsible, Captain Pasebakhaen, seconds before he dies. (Yes I was waiting for it )

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-12-51-36.jpg

I also enjoy those times when I had one Equities unit sieging, and the defenders decided to come out to chase me. What I did was avoid their spearmen and go right after their weak missile units, and then retreat out of there. One time all their units were outside the fortress wall, so I chased after their routing missile units going into the city. I got to the city center and the 3:00 timer started. They got back at the 1:00 mark so I almost took the town with just one equities unit.

(notice that this was also Captain Pasebakhaen, in his first battle against me. He later got reinforcements to boost his army strength to over 2,000, before he got defeated.)

    Default Re: Your best battle.

I just won a major battle against the Pontius.

    Background:

I had 1,500 men sieging Pergamum. The AI send over 5,000 men from the east to reinforce the city, in 3 armies. Their first army, 2,400 men, blocked the bridge, which was the only way in and out of that province.

If my army gets trapped by 3 armies at once, it would probably get eliminated. If that happens I got no other major forces defending the western Turkey area. Lucky for me their 3 armies were apart from each other so they can't reinforce each other yet. Instead of waiting around to be slaughtered, I decided to try for a break out.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-22-56-21.jpg

That army was lead by a general and had multiple elite Scythed Chariots, all experienced and upgraded. The rest were spearmen.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-22-40-54.jpg

    The Battle:

I had fought the Pontius before. Last time I got a very lucky win due to horrible starting position, at the bottom of a hill. This time the location was much better, since I got to start on a hill top.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-27-17-24.jpg

Learning from past experience that Scythe Chariots go amok when they see fire, I told my archers to focus fire on them.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-29-54-95.jpg

They tried charging uphill. But going uphill greatly slowed down their speed. They really lacked missile units and so were no threat from range. They never gained much ground. Before they knew it all 4 of their Scythed Chariots started amok.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-33-30-19.jpg

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-36-08-09.jpg

Just like last time those Scythed Chariots killed many of their own units, including each other. The rest of their units, mostly spearmen, kept up with the charge. But I have lots of experience fighting spearmen, thanks to my battles against the Egyptians. With my missile on skirmish mode they got no chance. Their general, seeing no other chance of winning, tried charging at one of my Archers and got about 100 kills. But he was quickly overwhelmed by my vast cavalry before he could do more damage. He escaped with 7 horses left.

With their general routing, all of their spearmen started routing after just 1 or 2 volleys of fire arrows.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-49-18-62.jpg

My cavalry gave chase and none of the spearmen made it home alive.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-53-28-89.jpg

In the end this is my biggest victory so far in the campaign. The enemy almost outnumbered me 2 to 1. And at the end they got slaughtered while killing very few of my troops. They have 217 friendly fire causalities from their own Scythed Chariots.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-54-48-97.jpg

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...2-55-04-09.jpg

Now I can either retreat back to Sardis, or keep of fighting against the rest of that reinforcement. Don't know yet.

How would a Phalanx full stack stand against Thousands and Thousands of Barbarians.
So I put it to the test. Each barbarian has Max upgrades. and weapons armor, so do mine.

I went against Gaul, Naked Warriors/Chosen Swordsmen, Cavalry, Dacia's fauxmen and Berserkers, Germania, Chosen Axemen, Warband, Berserkers, Cavalry, Scythia pure Head hunting maidens.
No archers or missile fire units. Map was Greek Shore. I also turned off Fatigue in preferences

OMG pure chaos LOL. One side almost broke through. But I had diverted some parts of my Crowded box phalanx onto the otherside.

SO many barbarians, it was so crowded everywhere! I would I screenshotted those moments but I was just so scared LOL. Tons of barbarians eager to eat my general's face off.... He's lucky to be alive. Just look at him with 8 Sacred Band left

My laptop performance was going to lag, so I had to reduce Scythia's Maiden's

Phalanxes against dirty barbarians are hardly fair!
