Default Why are the Romans still called the Byzantines in-game?

If the popular thing on this forum is to refer to the Byzantines as the Romans (as they referred to themselves) why hasn't the faction been renamed in the mod itself? I know there has been a great deal of discussion and debate about it on the forum, and as a relative newcomer it seems the majority of people call them the Romans.

It just strikes me as odd that it's such a simple thing to change. Or maybe even change it to "The Empire of the Greeks" as they were popularly referred to by outside nations during the period.

For those who don't know or haven't seen the endless debate threads the term "Byzantine Empire" didn't pop up until about a century after the fall of the empire.

To be honest I could care less what their name is as long as their fun to play... I imagine there just going with their most recent name.

I guess its because byzantine empire is their more common name nowadays, and in 6.3, they were called the Roman Empire (It doesn't matter as long as they as they have Scholarii)

It doesn't bother me at all. And I know it has been discussed to death.

I'm just curious as to why it hasn't been done if it is so simple and if the convention here on this forum seems to be to refer to them as the Romans.

I can kind of see your point, but your example doesn't really work. Roman is an English word - I'm not suggesting we call them the Basileia Rhōmaiōn - the Greek version. If everyone who plays the game calls them the Romans why shouldn't they be called this?

It's rather annoying when people call Byzantines Romans. Everybody who knows a bit about story knows that their culture had , by the time of M2TW, became radically different from the anciet Romans.

Anyone who knows more knows better. Culture changed yes, but it was still the same political entity.

To all: Please read the extensive existing threads on the topic.

Before this thread starts to cover the same old tired ground and before the expired equine is flagellated once again, this thread is getting closed. The OP has ways of changing the name if he so wishes.

To the OP: It's still the Byzantine empire in-game simply because it hasn't been changed yet
