Stakes at the gates are so great... I usually put two rows of them, because of the annoying and so hard to destroy ram.
Trebuchets are great to destroy siege towers, an hour ago I destroyed one filled with a entire stack of knights, just as they were about to jump out !
Long pikes making a pike wall all around the gate behind the stacks are great too, with heavy troops just behind, with unused troops as well, the more concentration, the more moral drop for the enemy.
On the walls, I usually concentrate only on the ladders, because I usually destroy easily the siege towers with trebuchets.
To counter ladders, heavy troops with good stamina.
I love seige battles when defending. But still, my preferred ones are with my army staying on a river bridge and being attacked. For the crusades, I take Antioch and Tortosa, and put an army on the river passage and on the two bridges. And then FUN !![]()
Umm, fight as hard as you can to drive them back? Draw men from other armies to try and assemble a relief effort as well, if it might help. And carry out sally battles every turn if possible. Try to draw them into throwing their troops at you. If you have catapults inside, try to bring the enemy within range of those. Constantinople is a powerful city, very difficult to take. But 6 stacks will be tough to lift. You might have to just admit defeat and retake the city another day, when there are fewer stacks kicking around.
Allahu Akbar jajaja u go bye bye infedel jaja
To be honest, if there is anything to drive me absolutely mad in this game it's trying to play the benevolent trader nation and getting a Jihad called against Constantinople. That said...
I've recently begun a new tactic to defend against Jihads... wait for it...
Abandon the city and let them have it!
If I remember correctly, there is a time requirement before another Jihad can be called, and fighting off the single stack that just took the city a few turns after the other armies have dispersed is a hell of a lot easier than trying to hold against multiple, blood-thirsty armies.
Does it go against history? Sure. Does it diminish a sense of role-play? Sure. But, it gets the job done, nonetheless.
Nwm.

Evacuate the city, let the Jihads take it, then counter attack two turns later....should be very easy.

Dulaman na farraige, b'fhearr a bhi in Eirinn"
With a city as defensible as Contantinople, you can easily hold it against 6 armies (more actually). Just make sure you bolster the garrison as soon as the 'Jihad called' message comes up for any of your cities. With the proper mix of troops in your garrison, defending crusades and jihads are easy as well as being the best part of the game.
I would never surrender the city! The fact that some of you advocate is apalling! NEVER SURRENDER!
"When I lead my army against Baghdad in anger, whether you hide in heaven or in earth, I will bring you down from the spinning spheres; I will toss you in the air like a lion. I will leave no one alive in your realm; I will burn your city, your land, your self. If you wish to spare yourself and your venerable family, give heed to my advice with the ear of intelligence. If you do not, you will see what God has willed." -Hülegü, the "Destroyer of Baghdad"
This guy is right, especially if you have Ballista towers, you have Adrianople to supply you with troops, how can that go wrong? Even infantry Acritae can usually beat the crap out of most armies on Jihad... unless it's dismounted ghulams and those are likely only coming from the Khwarezmians... those guys usually pack a punch, but the Moors are a bad joke and so are the Fatamids early on... and well, even later, the only real superstar of the Muslims is the Turks with the Khwarezmians getting smashed to component particles by the Mongols in about 120 turns.
Have boats filled with troops on standby near Constantinople that way you can relieve and send in additional troops to back up the depleted garrison. The boats also help when a dumb enemy general buys a mercenary cog or galley and loads everything up in it, take it out, that's one Jihad army down the drain.
well i could not leave the city because i was surrounded, so.. i fight against 4 armies in the same battle, i just lost the city and the turks began to attack ankara with large armies.. I'm in serious trouble![]()
The evacuate and take later approach sounds crafty, especially if they outnumber you badly. If you have enough armies of your own and good enough troops, turning it into an epic bloodbath could be fun too, even if you lose horribly.
Block the 2 land bridges (one ship each) and sink anything that floats towards you and has a crescent flag with your superior ships.
But it's more fun to fight them. I won about 8 battles by holding the enemy with shieldwall, and use generals and other cavalry for some good old Hammer&Anvil. Only problem was that I couldn't kill the Faction Heir, because it caused CTD, so eventually I had to start a new campaign.
So fight as much as you can out side the city and retreat to city if you have to and remember to kill the Jihad generals so they can't make new Jihad armies.
Same here. Fatimid crushed Crusaders and is eating Seljuks alive, while Seljuks send all their army for Jihad... pretty stupid. Constantinople is formidable, and just be ready to replenish any troops then you should be fine, especially when muslim factions tend to only have horse archers and light infantry. I only had problem with two Moor stacks, which took detour through Northern HRE and had half of them with... Saxon Huscarls and other western heavy infantries. THAT was unexpected.
all you have to do is parade around the walls carrying the statue of the mother mary... all invaders give up and go home it seems
Seriously though, beef up the units in the city and also those in Adrianople and Nicea, these can be used to either add units into the city when possible or to form a relieving force to attack the beseigers outside the city, with judiscious planning you can pick off the non-allied jihad armies individually.

Surely you should have been able to fend off any attack with a sufficient garrison? It is a siege after all.
