    Default Genre of music

So I've been playing various Medieval II mods (most especially the most recent SS) and really enjoying the period music. The lute, lyre, recorder genre that sounds like it was composed for court dancing is extremely relaxing, I want to find more of it.

I've enjoyed the music from this game, as well as music from tv shows like The Tudors, and games and shows of other similar genre. (Great job btw to whoever composed or compiled the music unique to SS 6.3 and 6.4)

My question is, to someone musically educated, -or someone who just happens to know- , what Genre of music is this type of music? If I wanted to find a CD or album of period secular court music (non-classical..perhaps baroque?) what would I look for? Are there bands known for performing this style? Particular historical composers?

    Many thanks in advance.

The thread is nice, and it has some interesting music to be sure, thanks! I did enjoy all the music I listened to on that thread, it was educational, if not quite exactly what I was looking for. I'm hoping to find a collection of instrumental music that at least sounds superficially medieval. Something that would be sufficiently lighthearted that you could play it at say, a themed party.

I was also hoping that there was a website devoted to period music (or approximations of period music). It may sound odd but I like the music from the games and tv shows more than I like the actual thing.

Is anyone aware if medieval European court music or tavern music has a quick label? A genre? Something I can plop in a google search box and find results for? Are there bands devoted to it?

I'm still looking on my own, but it's hard to look for something on the internet when you don't know what it's even called!

Any help or pointers in a right-ish direction would be greatly appreciated.

This type of music is usually broadly classified as simply medieval or folk music. You can go into specifics like "Elizabethan consort music" etc. but there's no need. If you simply search for it as medieval/folk you should find plenty of bands who deal with this sort of thing.

A more mainstream band of that kind is the "Mediaeval Baebes":

If you guys have any proposed music for future versions of SS, i'll be glad to have them in. Only thing is we need to be sure that we can actually copy the music into the game.
