Well, apart from the fact Pontus isn't Persian and some bias to be expected, I must say your post is a pleasant surprise.

    For me:

    Factions:
    1. Carthage. Well, Carthage kicks ass. Especially Roman ass.
    2. TSE. Huge roster.
3&4&5 Arverni, Casse and Aedui. Celts FTW.
    Units:
    1. Galatian mercs of all types (I usually use the ones with mail armor and huge swords, but I remember there being a few other types)
    2. Lusotanian elite shock infantry, foot cataphracts for short. They look like vikings, and they fight like gods.
    3. Gaesatae. No comment.
    4. Bactrian cataphracts. People in full armor with armored horses. What's not to like? Especially when the Bactrians aren't barbarians like the Parthians.
    5. Any other Gallic unit.

Hm? I ... have no idea what units you're referring to here. There are two Galatian units armoured in mail, and neither have huge swords, nor are they mercenary units. One is pretty much a Neitos reskin (Galatikoi Klerouchoi, available to the Ptolemies and Saba), the other a Spear/Sword unit (Galatikoi Kuarothoroi, available to TSE, Makedonia, Rome, and Pontus).

In fact, the only Galatian Mercs are the Shortswordsmen and the Tindanotae ... (of course, the only other Galatian *unit* left is the Heavy Cavalry).
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

    What?!

  6. #6

Default Re: favorite faction and units

    Let`s think.

    1. Bactria

My first serious and successful campaign was played with bactria, so i naturally have a soft spot for them in my heart. I love their history and all the units they have access to, allowing me to use many different tactics.

    2. Rome

What`s not to love about Rome? Their troops and their infrastructure are extremely strong and i love that whole "Splendor of Rome" thing.

    3. Sweboz

Being a german it`s just natural that i like the sweboz. They are interesting on both the strat map and the battlemap.

    4. Saba

Not the strongest faction by far- But i just love them and their units. Archer Spearmen as a core unit? Yes. Yes, very much.

    5. Koinon Hellenon

I admire old greece and the Koinon Hellenon. They have access to very nice units and their starting position is also very interesting.

Honorable Mentions: Casse and Pontus. I like the Casse for their whole "Hero" aspect and Pontus for their varied unit types- Chariots and Galatians, wow.

    Units

    1. Worgogez

Personified awesomeness. Wild, free, germanic Warriors that act like wolves? They are also incredible deadly on the Battlefield.

    2. Germanic Naked Fanatics

They are like equally awesome brothers of the Worgogez- Painting themselves black and living the legend of the Wild Hunt? Very nice and useful.

    3. Spartan Hoplites

Yes, yes. The Spartans weren`t as awesome as popular cultur believes them to be. I still love and admire their laconic wit and their customs. The unit itself is insanely strong on the battlefield with great staying power.

    4. Archer Spearmen both indian and arabian variants

Learned to love them during my bactrian campaign and wanted to marry them once i tried playing as Saba. They are insanely versatile and versatility is the key to success.

    5. Saka-Rauka Bodyguard

Just love them for their looks and their pure strength. They fight like Demigods.

Honorable Mention: Elephants and (scythed) Chariots. Weapons of Terror that can really mess up the ranks of my enemies.

    My top 5 factions:

1.Republic of Rome is an absolute must for the first place.

2.Hayasdan. Love the idea of a small satrapy resurrecting the Achaemenid empire, plust they have some cool units. (like the armenian medium infantry)

3.Cassae. The sheer amount of morale affecting units makes them awesome.

4 and 5. Ptolemaioi and TSE. I like the sheer amount of units they can wield. Hellenic units mixed with natives makes an awesome combination.

    My top 5 units.

    1. Dosidataskeli (even though they aren't in the campaign anymore, they look epicly awesome and do well in a battle)

    2. Thorakitai (hellenic legionnare heavy infantry? hell yeah!)

    3. Chariots (any) Are great for killing cavalry and chasing down routers.

    4. Bhosporan archers. Heavy armour + composte bows looks great (though I'm yet to try them out)

5.Rhomphaiaphoros. Warriors with a big, two-handed blade and they're amazing in combat.

IIRC, they were too small in numbers to form units in the RTW way.

But you still have the TSE version of the unit (Thorakitai Agematos Basilikou) They might have less armour, morale and traits, but should do the job well.

Well, the problem I have with the Eastern factions is that they usually have weak infantry. And while I love using cavalry for hammer-and-anvil tactics, I do not feel well when commaning cavalry-dominant armies.

As for the Rhompaia guys, I am their fan, because they are the barbarian addition to the mostly orderly army of Makedonia/Epeiros. I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about commanding a full army of Thracian barbarians (although during my last campaign I created such stack and used it against Romanoi with success, but with heavy casualties).

yeah good infantry is fun to command even in my pahlava campaign I use many infantrys but as you pointed their infantry sucks so I have to haras the enemy with HAs and persians archers engage with infantry and then flank the enemy with my Pahlavans.

but if your problem is lack of good infantry why don't you like the barbarians they have better infantry then the hellens and the romans the best of the best maybe those celtic nacked dudes with 2 HP they have a moral of 22 while spartiai have only 17

    anyways any other openions ??????????

The barbarians are irritating due to limitations of their development (no good roads etc. I'm also playing on city mod b, which means they cannot build cities, large cities and huge cities...) and I don't like their chaotic way of fighting and general lack of discipline.

I use the naked guys as a supplement for my regular Hellenistic armies - I either recruit them in Gallatia (as Seleukids) or get mercenary ones (as Makedonia). And I use a lot of celtic and gallatian auxiliaries in my stacks. But I like the concept of building an army around the stalwart Makedonian phalanx.

Play as one of the Gallic factions. They both get Paved Roads and good infrastructure (nearly as good as the Civilized Factions), and while their low-tier units are less disciplined and lower-morale than, say, the Sweboz or Getai, their elite units are superior. Really, it's quite possible to do Roman- or Greek-style fighting with the Celts, at least against other barbarians. Later, if you go up against trained Roman or Greek armies, you're going to want better-trained and more elite armies to use those tactics (IE, Neitos and elite Regionals/Solduros or Arjos instead of Gaeroas and Bataroas). Heck, early on, Teceitos give you quite an edge against Civilized factions - shame the Gauls lose them eventually.
