Default Named Legions or Sacred Bands?

I've just started looking at adding named legions. It looks like it works fine with both the RTW exe and BI exe. I could just add names for the Roman first cohorts, but another possibility is to have named Sacred Bands for each of the Greek Cities (it wouldn't work very well to do both).

    Grr...! Can't we have both?

If not then... I vote for Named Legions. Comparied to the Greeks in XGM, the Roman need this little flavour more than thay do.

But really, can't we have both?

I too think that the both is best, but if it can't be done than i prefer legions to be named

The name shows up in three parts [Legio] [number] [name]. The [name] depends on the region where the unit is recruited and I can change that quite easily. I thought I could change the [Legio] part, but it now looks like it is hard-coded, so that means using the mechanism for other units like Sacred bands might not be feasible anyway.

If I do figure out how to change or eliminate the [Legio] part it would have to be the same for all factions and units, and the numbering is almost certainly hard coded, so having named First Cohorts and Sacred Bands would look a little weird. Probably the best I could do would be something like [blank] [number] [name] which would produce names like:

    I Sacred Band of Corinth
    II Legio Britanica

Dime i have other idea that might be a little bit hard to do but still we would have named legions and different sacred bands. if you could make a little bit different sacred bands for each big greek city. so we have corinthian sacred band, and if you can make 3-4 other bands with slightly different skins and same stats. i'm thinking mabe bands for athens, larissa and pergamum? don't know is it possible to do because of the unit limmit. you can make them with recruitment time like 10-15 turns, so there would be no spamming. what do you think?

Yes, that could be done. Obviously the number of cities that would have their own Sacred Band would be limited, and they would probably be retrainable only at their city of origin, like the Spartan Royal Guard. I could write scripts to spawn one unit per city when each city hits huge size. Managing lots of unique units like that could get to be a pain though.

DBH, I think you're overdoing yourself with separate sacred band for each city... Maybe you can add the eagle to the royal guard though...

Yeah, I tend to think it would be a bit much. If I had some really nice skins to use for them I might be tempted just for the eye-candy value, but having a bunch of unique units that all look pretty much the same, and function in the same way, seems like more trouble than it is worth (for the player I mean, it would be a very easy change for me to make).

    I would say Sacred Bands
but at least some Named Legions would be nice.

I seem to remember that the Romans could have been more detailed.

Looks like most people would prefer named legions, and in the end I had no luck changing the [legio] part of the name anyway. Here is the list of names I'm planning to use:

    Adiutrix (Egypt)
    Africa (most African provinces)
    Alaudae (Umbria)
    Apollinaris (Illyria, roughly)
    Augusta (Rome)
    Britanica (all British provinces)
    Cyrenaica (Cyrenaica)
    Ferrata (Apulia)
    Flavia Felix (Cisalpine Gaul)
    Flavia Firma (Venetia)
Fretensis (Sicilia Romanus, Apulia on MM)
    Fulminata (Etruria)
    Gallica (all Gallic provinces)
    Gemina (most islands)
    Germanica (all German provinces)
    Hispana (all Iberian provinces)
    Italica (Segesta)
    Macedonica (Macedonia, roughly)
    Macriana (Scilicia Poeni)
    Minervia (Mosly Greek Cities)
    Parthica (most eastern provinces)
    Primigenia (Scilicia Romanus)
    Rapax (Bruttium)
    Scythia (most north eastern provinces)
    Victrix (Campania)

Most of these are historical names of actual legions, although some have been simplified, and a few have been made up (Africa, Germanica, and Britanica) although they follow the pattern of several real legion names. I will give the each Italian province, and the provinces around Italy, their own name. Some of the names will be used for wide areas, as indicated in the list. The others will be used where they seem fitting.

I use this http://www.livius.org/le-lh/legio/legions.htm for the legion names and info for my mod. Anyway, sorry to jump in here, have you guys found out how to change the Legio thing (or delete it) or is it hard-coded ?
