    Default AI Aggressiveness

So after a few years, I finally got back into RTW and more specifically back into RTR. In my current VH/VH campaign as the Romans, I noticed that the AI is incredibly aggressive, even to its own detriment. After reducing the Gauls (who attacked me first) to about two settlements, they still refuse to accept a ceasefire. It is my understanding that there is a Forced Diplomacy mod that comes with the install (I used the no-nonsense install) but I can't seem to find a readme on how to use it.

Also I noticed in my search that apparently the game has been balanced for M/M. Is this true? I understand that the AI gets certain bonuses (which really don't help them much anyways) on higher difficulties, but is there much of an adverse effect on gameplay otherwise? It does seem like the AI is far more aggressive on VH than on M which is incredibly annoying since I sometimes enjoy having a period where I am not being attacked on every single front. Would I be able to manually change AI aggressiveness on higher difficulties? If so, where would I look and what tags should I be looking for?

Hiya, mate. Welcome to the boards and back to RTR.

Sorry about the lack of a force-diplo readme. I swear I have one of those around here...ah hah! It's on the main info page hidden behind a spoiler tag:

    1. Press Esc
    2. Go to Game Options
    3. Check the "Reset Advisor" box
    4. Return to the campaign map.
    5. Use a diplomat to engage in diplomatic relations with another faction (that sounds a little dirty...)
    6. Click the "?" in the top right hand corner of the diplomacy window
    7. The advisor pops up. Follow the instructions by clicking "show me"
    8. Click the advisor's face to make it go away.
    9. Select the offers/demands you wish to make.
    10. Make the offer/demand. The AI will (grudgingly) accept them...if it has the ability to do so.
I'll do better documentation for 4.0. In fact, I'm working on that right now. We can't quite have a beta till people know how to play the darn thing.

We did balance the game for M/M. You won't really get a feel for the way units interact in battles unless you're on M battle difficulty. VH campaign is fine, but you will see (as you have) suicidal AI aggressiveness. Unfortunately, there's no way to manually alter AI agressiveness short of changing the difficulty.

Hmmm...you could always give the AI X denarii per turn using the money script. The script is actually in place, just commented out (i.e., there's a semicolon in front of the line preventing its parsing by the game) for most factions except the poor ones. You can go into that script, un-comment it, and then change the denarii numbers to be whatever you want. It's currently rigged to check to see if the AI has less than Y denarii, then give it X denarii if it is that poor.

why would someone who doesnt want a very aggressive AI have campaigns on VH if one of the main aspects of of VH is a more aggressive AI? seems like the easiest way to change that would be to play on H instead...

Possibly someone who wants to give the AI money bonuses, hence my suggestion of using the money script to compensate for that.
