Default What happens when you are in debt?

OK so I started playing DarthMod with barb factions and have found myself in debt for the first time (newbie).

What exactly are the penalties for this, apart from the fact that it is impossible to retrain lost troops/buy anything?

    - I am not using mercs much, but it would be logical to assume they quit their employer and become rebels?
    - Are there any specific combat penalties or desertions of existing troops?

Easy way out is to simply disband/waste in battle excess troops until you are in black again, but if there are no actual penalties then maybe there is no need to do rash moves

I tried Google but couldn't find any precise data, I apologize if this is old news for the veterans.

    Thanks for replies!

That's it. Nothing else happens AFAIK.

Best way out: Conquer more cities.
I would rather have a memory that is fair but unfinished than one that goes on to a grievous end.

Well, obviously you canīt build anything, too, but nothing more then that. Just watch out that you donīt go too much into debt.

Basically, you need to disband excess troops, raise taxes, and exterminate every city you can find.

If you're in debt the repo man will come to your faction and take away all the peasants and burn them in a pit of eternal fire located in the faraway region of New Windsor , and then nothing happens >_<

Thanks for the replies, what about the mercs? No upkeep for them but they faithfully stay on?

You pay them, actually. The rich people in your country give you the money, but you have to give it back somewhen and make them political favors (at least, thats the explanaiton my fantasy comes up with).

My fantasy preferred imagining that i was stealing their money and babies to make armies and anyone that didnt like it could emigrate or revolt. To me, Very High Taxes was a population control measure.

Oddly enough, no one does this IRL.

Are you sure that there is no upkeep for mercenaries? I would think that there would be. Check the unit card.

You pay the money for mercenaries but you never have any consequences other than the inability to buy anything. I wouldn't bother disbanding units, just move them into armies and attack with them, you're only going to use the money you get from them to build more armies later anyway. If you want to specialise your settlements, you can destroy buildings you don't want, like archery ranges etc.

I remember when I was first in debt.

What I do to stay out of it, is no matter what city I conquer, I exterminate (unless one of my recent cities were captured - in that case I occupy). Extermination brings populations under your control swiftly and easily. And you rake out 5-10k denarii easily from it. Set all your taxes as as high as you can without going below 105% happiness. Build units only when necessary. Don't build military units and leave them in your base the entire game. I usually have a main army, and build peasants in all the rest of my cities so that I can get my garrison bonus.

And what I do to stay ahead with money, is when all my buildings do not have any buildings constructing, I pick new buildings for EVERY SINGLE one of them. Then I don't build a single building until EVERY single settlement has finished building their buildings. Once all my settlements are not building anymore, I select new buildings to build. This manages my money so that I don't fall short of it. Best way to conserve denarii is to also know how to fight your battles. I can win outrageous battles all the time. (5000 vs 800), and only lose ~ 200. It's about CAVALRY. You'll never win solely on infantry btw.
