Default What's all this complaining about sea transport?

People always ALWAYS complain about armies not being able to travel by boat which they are perfectly capable of. Crete, and Rhodes as well as Cyprus switch hands alot, which if the AI can't transport by sea shouldn't happen. The AI also sails to Crusade if they have a fleet nearby, but people complain because they don't recruit mercenary fleets.

It's not that the AI can't do it, it's simply that in most games and to most players, the AI simply does not carry out seaborne invasions. I'm happy to hear that you have a campaign in which the AI does do so, but you must realize that it is not as common as you might think, it's quite uncommon actually, especially in Vanilla.

Not all copies of the same program are 100% the same, different cache, different variables and equations and dozens of things differentiate between computer to computer, software to software and even saved game to saved game.

Even if you save a custom battle replay an entirely different battle can play out.

If you have the 1.5 patch, creative assembly fixed the naval invasions, so the AI will go by boat if they can. THe only thing I ever saw before is the AI diplomats going on and off the boat at the same place for like 20 turns.

In my game as England so far (1.5 patch),

Hungary beat everyone else to the Holy Land in the first crusade, by sea.

A scottish Army landed in Northern France, which swiftly rebelled, leaving an army of Landless Scots travelling Belgium, no doubt incorporating Mayonnaise into Haggis...

Also the damned Portuguese have invaded Wales!!

Never seen any crusaders sail. But the Scots do like to take Bruges and Antwerp, and Wales and Ireland are apparently sacred to Spanish/Portuguese religion or something, because they regularly send their kings or princes on aggressive pilgrimmages there.

The reason they never sail is because they probably don't have a fleet ready, their real inability is their inability to recruit mercenary ships.

You know after downloading the patch I don't think I've ever seen the Portuguese NOT send affonso (Or whatever his name is) to take Wales.

I've had loads of naval invasions during my Venice campaign. It seems as if the Byzantines land a new army on Crete and Rhodes every other turn its so common. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for my England campaign. The Danish landed an army, but spent the next 5 or so turns moving them on and off the boat. Seems their attempt at backstabbing me failed epically

if the ai can get you by moving overland they almost definitely will. if they have to use boats, and they're at war with you, then they almost definitely will. i find its less a case of them never using boats, and more a case of the factions that could annihlate you by sea-raiding behind your lines never do. they'll drop off their armies close to your frontier and hope their assaults go somewhere.

Patch 1.5 should only impact the Kingdoms Campaigns, not the Vanilla game, so nothing in 1.5 should make the vanilla AI do things differently. Maybe if 1.5 is essential to a mod your playing, then maybe naval invasions are "fixed". But personally I've never had a problem with the AI launching seabourne attacks.

Gigantus made a mod called Bare Kingdoms which is the vanilla game with all the kingdoms additions incorporated into it. It was made to be a mod base but you can play the vanilla game with all the 1.5 goodies by running it through this.

The AI only attack bordering settlements. I was the english once and I had taken all of France and was at war with Milan. A crusade to COrdoba was called and Milan joined it. THey failed to reach the target and they were in spain somewhere. Once they came into my lands, they skipped over the lightly garissoned TOulouse to go besiege heavily garissoned Marseille.

Island invasions don't really count as much as beachheads because the only way to get to an island is by boat, therefore that's what the AI does when it wants a settlement. Spain and Portugal invading Wales and Ireland isn't too because it's roughly the same distance from Spain to Corsica and Sardinia, and I've seen them there a few times. Also Egypt to Crete.

I think maybe the OP is confusing M2TW with ETW.

No complaints here regarding AI naval malarkeys in the regular game. the ai seems to toddle around a fair bit by boat, and its always a pleasure sending their stacks to Davy Jones locker

Take Sardinia on very hard campaign difficulty and every nation on the map will land a force by boat there

Hell, take it on any difficulty and the Spanish, French, Milanese, Sicilians, Moors, and maybe Portuguese will all suddenly decide they want it.

this. everytime i capture sardinia or corsica, the spanish, the french, the moors and the portuese will launch an assault on it. I often ttry to sink their ships before they arrive

but thats the only naval movement ive seen by the AI

Playing as France in the Kingdoms Grand Campaign Mod, England occasionally launched seaborne invasions against Caen or Rennes before I shut down their port cities.
